Timing of an Internal Audit Schedule

"The organization shall conduct audits at planned intervals";

"Taking into consideration the status and importance of the processes and areas to be audited";

"A documented procedure shall be established";

That's the basis. Your internal system should be completely audited before re-certification but annual surveillance audits are not concerned with that. You should have a schedule scheme that allows you to take into consideration status and importance, i.e. customer audits & findings, internal process non-conformance's, & improvement opportunities. A "good" auditor is going to asses your system and ensure conformance to the standard, not getting hung up on insignificant busy-work.

The purpose & focus of internal audits should be on how to improve the organization and it's processes - not how to please someone you see once a year..........

I have a question - how often do you change your audit schedule? I am having trouble with 7.4 of 9001 and would like to pull my audit in by about 6 months. Does auditing one process twice a year raise a red flag to an auditor?

If they know what they're looking at, yes! If you schedule audits according to ISO 9001 'status and importance' you shouldn't need to 'pull my audit in by 6 months' - there's your answer...Stop trying to predict when to audit an element (which you shouldn't be doing either)!

Depends, but even if you have identified issues within that process, you caught it yourself, which can be a point for effective internal audits. I'm not suggesting to do so, but don't look at frequency as a bad thing.

On the other side, if you conducted 2 internal audits on a process and the external auditor audits the process and finds numerous nonconformities you have issues beyond the process itself.

Revising your audit schedule demonstrates "status & importance" and also allows for consideration for previous audits, i.e customer, agency. You can revise it as much as you want, in fact I like seeing revised schedules in cases where audits are being carried out effectively.

Bottom-line, business needs change daily, making a schedule for 6 months or a year out is not totally a bad idea, but flexibility should be incorporated.

Last couple of places I worked at, the audits were spaced out from Feb - Nov (tried to stay out of the holiday madness). Each SOP (tier II was audited) at least twice per year and others added if determined to be necessary. The Quality Manual was audited 1x per year, and production areas processes were audited once per month.

Perhaps that seems to be a bit much, but we would rather find areas of concern before they become ingrained and hard to root out.

Andy, the reason I have my audits scheduled is because one of our large customers nailed me once for not have an audit schedule for the new year. This was in January. Since then I have always tried to have a schedule and stick to it.

Doug
What was the bases for the NC? There is no requirement for having a yearly schedule outlined in January, unless that is it's in YOUR internal procedures.

Ouch, Doug! Why not tell them that you're now not in compliance with ISO 9001 (or whatever) and tell them it's costing so much time to keep changing the schedule...you'll be forced to increase prices to cover the administrative costs and send this to the buyer...
