Titles for Quality Functions - Very small business quality department query

#11
The only item that I would add is to make sure there isn't any conflict of interest. For example, if you're the Management Rep then you can't audit Management Controls, etc.
Why not? What's 'Management Controls'? The only thing you can audit is your own work..............That doesn't mean a process that other people implement, does it? If that's what you mean, then we'd need to double the head count of this company just to meet ISO........

Just look over for basic stuff you might get yourself, later pass it over for the QD/ QA department. that's will be fine.

Later for the real serious stuff you will HAVE to ask them for the titles - if you're trying to make an PRO job, especially when it's "Start Up" you should do it the best way, don't be bashful.
I agree with AndyN. I am the QA Manager for a same engineering firm and I wear five or six different hats. Don't worry about it.

A 7-man shop that is working thru the same issues put together their audit program utilizing an external auditor.

Did you mean to say the only thing you can not audit is your own work?
Oh, yes indeed, Doug. That's what the standard says!

Makes sense, really. You can audit (let's say as the MR) a procedure you wrote for document control, or internal audits (if you don't do all of them) etc. becuase the key point is, other people have to implement them.

I recognize that it takes a special kind of person to audit something they wrote, when they see other folks actually doing it! But then, it takes a special kind of person to audit, anyway.......;)

A special thanks to Doug and Andy for bringing up and confirming the fact that you can audit anything except your own work. If I was a lab tech, I could audit everyone else in the lab, just not my own work. (although in my case, I'm more critical of myself, i could probably audit my own work more objectively than that of others, lol.)

AndyN - thank you for clarifying my posting. I was thinking Design Controls and Management Review at the same time and Management Controls was typed out....:tg:

Yes, the theme of the message was you can't audit your own work & the use of external consultants was one way getting this accomplished. Though it could be less expensive than training another internal auditor, the value of having a "fresh set of eyes" reviewing your QMS is quite helpful.

It's true a 'fresh set' of eyes can be helpful, almost mandatory, in such a small company. I would, however, suggest being very careful in the selection of someone to do them. The last thing you need is for the consultant (or whomever) to come in and do a quasi-CB audit each time. That's been my experience in many cases.

Your source should do a 'proper' internal audit. When I have done them, it was very important to look at the business performance, not (just) compliance to the ISO requirements.

So, checklists etc. shouldn't be ISO oriented, but developed on your processes, consideration should be given to business performance issues etc. And the schedule can't be once or twice a year, either.
