To change or not to change? Our documents reference ISO 9001:2000

I am asking everyone for their thoughts on this question. Our quality Policy Manual as well as other documents reference ISO 9001:2000. Do you think all these documents will have to be changed to reference ISO 9001:2008 or can a blanket statement be made saying they will be changed as needed? Any thought are appreciated. And again, thanks in advance to all who respond.

Better yet, take out all references to the standard! You don't need it, do you? It's not required and I bet it doesn't do anything for anyone else.........plus you won't have to do it again, in the future.

Re: To change or not to change?

Well, I'm planning to change the few instances where we actually have 9001-2000. We purposely only used that designation in the quality manual. All other documentation, if it refers to the standard at all, refers to ISO 9001 (current revision).

What does your document control procedure say? Does it allow a temporary change? If so, you could put in a temporary change to the document control procedure that allows the removal of the words ISO 9001:2000 (which I also advocate - they are not needed in most cases) as the documents go through cyclic reviews/updates or during as-needed changes.

Re: To change or not to change?

I'm with Andy. Take out the reference altogether. Or just change it to "ISO 9001" and leave out the edition.

If you want to leave it in I would say create a formal plan you can show to an auditor that says something along the lines of "All references to ISO 9001:2000 will be updated as documents are revised during the normal course of business. Final date to have all references to past revision(s) changed is _________".

I think the only thing I have to change is the Quality Manual. No individual procedures.

I have spent the last 6-9 months removing all references to ISO 9001. Why? Like has been said there is absolutely no benefit to having it.

This "generic" phrasing is what I used for accommodating ISO, FAA, FDA quality management system requirements and never received a negative comment from an auditor. FAA, in particular, was very fussy about wording and referring to specific rules and guidelines.

I know it is a bit of hassle to make the changes from 2000 to 2008 but surely we can manage to make changes once every 8 years or so can't we?

I guess it all depends on how many documents need FORMAL REVISION (draft, approvals, issue, distribute, recall or remove obsolete versions.););)

Keep it simple.

Here is my concern with the FAA why cant manuals be combined?

FAA repair manual with quality manual? Now with ISO which will confuss the FAA even more since they are learning new words.

Also: FAA Federal Aviation Admin They say they are now ISO but then you find out it is limited to a few locations. But yet they went thru the Registar but wont provide manual or procedures for public view??? That is if you can find anyone in the FAA who knows what ISO is. They did this to serve us the customer but yet wont allow access to the manual or procedures?? Just another scam from our Federal Gov. Try ask for a copy. What are they hiding?

These FAA personnel were lost: None could help. What's new right?
