So what those numbers seem to show is that virtually "overnight" suppliers when from good to bad because the standard didn't change that much. Seems to me they are on more of a "witch hunt" looking for non-conformances than what is really relevant to the organization (ok obviously they put the hammer down on the auditing community). These are transition audits and you see "majors" in areas that have been around for 20 years -- hard to believe imo.

The IATF 16949:2016 Standard includes quite a few new requirements. In addition, the CB auditors are "pressured" to become more vigilant. Whether they are focusing on the "right" stuff is a matter of discussion.

So what does it mean that (as of 5 months after the "Mandatory date"), less than 20% of Tier I suppliers have made the transition?

Doesn't seem like a stat to me, but a huge dropping of the ball. (On whose part is in question...).

This is going to be a major issue!

I don't think so. Fact of the matter is a QMS doesn't become non-functional the date a piece of paper expires. So what if you have a bunch of "uncertified" suppliers on Sept 15. Some people won't feel warm and fuzzy, but the world will not end. IATF, automakers, and CBs will all need to adjust and offer grace periods to get everything finished up.

This is what all my team who had dealing with auditor felt like.
Yes there are new requirements and old ones got more "demanding".
But we still had a lot of stuff not checked from new IATF requirements.
Worst part is, we got only one line, regarding project, that was in report section under positive findings. Auditor didn't even check that project. Are there really no good finding in our organization? Felt bad, still does. I hope next year will be more balanced.
