10. What is ISO 9001?

9 It costs too much to register

8 we have ethical conflict since we own RAB (and ignore #9)

7 we have no contractual obligation with our customers

6 there is no benefit for us (remember, we are THE quality professionals and we know)

5 what do you mean we have to write procedures? Do you know how complicated our organization is!!!!!!!

4 huh, not only we have write procedures but we have to FOLLOW them!!!!!

3 we only make money through ISO 9001 advertisers

2 what if we fail!!!!!

1 WE ARE NOT MORONS.....WE DON'T NEED ONE.


Seriously, can you think of one good reason why ASQ IS NOT ISO9001 REGISTERED?

Actually, yes.....it may not provide actual benefit for them.....simply because there are other recognitions which would be more appropriate.....as an example, ISO/IEC 17024.....

I know they have discussed that one, but not sure if they really will go there.

1) Think about who ASQ's customers are. Do they (we) REQUIRE ISO registration to do business with them?

2) Think about who ASQ's competition is. Are THEY registered to ISO (or some equivalent) and is there any competitive advantage to being registered?

So, Rob, are you hinting that they are a monopoly, and will tend to behave as such? Hmmmmm.

My opinion...

Is the ASQ a service organization or not? If ISO 9001 is of value to 'any' company / organization as is claimed (discounting defining 'customer requirements' as being 'of value'), I would think it would be of value to the ASQ. Not to mention 'six sigma' (to me this means analysis of, and acting on, data).

The ASQ is not registered (certified) for the same reason the majority of the 'Big Three' facilities are not TS 16949 compliant, much less registered. It's a matter of you either practice what you preach or not, and the ASQ doesn't any more than the 'Big Three'.

If ASQ wants to play god...let them.

My PMI at Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) is hopping mad because HQ Washington DC has said all FAA FSDO's have to become ISO 9001. I can't wait to fill out a blind 'Customer Satisfaction Survey'.

My Registrar is not ISO 9001 Certified, and neither was my ISO consultant.

Your registrar was not registered to ISO 9001? Oh my......actually, they do not get registered to 9001, they are accredited under ISO Guide 62 currently, which will soon be replaced by ISO/IEC 17021.

ASQ, being a provider of training and personnel certification, would logically seek accreditation to ISO/IEC 17024, which is the international standard for training and personnel certification. It is unlikely that they would be able to have either RAB or ANSI perfomr the accreditation however, because agreements and other relationships with both will potentially present a conflict of interest. I believe SCC might offer 17024 accreditation though......
