Torque Tester Calibration Traceability and Certificate question

We calibrate our power screwdrivers with a torque tester. We send the torque tester out for calibration and get a certificate. Should we also receive the calibration lab's certificate to prove they are a qualified lab thus completing the requirement to have the device traceable to a national or international measurement standard?

Re: Help needed; calibration traceability question

We do Verification of Labs ability to maintain traceability to NIST through vendor qualification, auditing the vendor periodically and checking they maintain their certification.

Check your Quality Procedures in regards to how your company qualifies approval for your vendors. You can request copy of certifications traceable to NIST from the vendor if they are traceable to NIST or another Standard.

If you have a requirement that the lab needs to be certified to a standard (like ISO 17025), asking for proof after they've done the work is too late. This needs to be part of your supplier approval process, as already mentioned.

I would be interested to see what equipment they used to calibrate the tool, when those tools are due for recalibration and to what standards they are traceable to.

What is your QMS? What are your internal procedures?

The traceability must be on the certificate.

ISO 9001 does not require laboratory certification to a recognized standard. ISO /TS does, for example.

Your internal procedures may define requirements for laboratory certifications.
