TQM Model as a 'House'

Hi,

I have been looking for stuff on TQM Model. Any thought, idea, link or input would be much appreciated. By amalgamating literature, experience, and cross-discussions I am just thinking of TQM House as a Model, which consists of the following components:

1. Foundation: ISO 9000 provides a strong foundation (if implemented holistically)

2. Bricks: Industry Specific Best Practices, 5S, Balanced Scorecard and Six Sigma can provide a building blocks to the TQM house

3. Reinforce: Communication can bind ALL the components together as a reinforcing material

4. Roof: With these components of the house, a TQM Roof can be placed including its objectives, principles and tools.

This model provides an integrated approach of blending ISO 9000 with other quality concepts. The model is going through a thought process and needs validation for its appropriateness, viability and effectiveness. Therefore, hypothesis analysis can be performed for doing research and findings.

It provides a lot more room to discuss and massage

My impression of TQM had always been a building with five columns, the '5 pillar' approach. We had recent discussions here and here.

It's an interesting approach, but it is difficult to comment on it's viability based on simply what you have written.

TQM is extremely complex and is affected by so many cultural and human related issues, that simply looking for methods of conveying the principals is just the tip of a very large iceberg. In fact, one author (sorry I should reference, but this is not a research paper is it!, please don't mark this!!) actually describe TQM as an iceberg! There are some elements, clearly visible from the surface, but there is so much more you can't see.

I would guess that a lot of the ISO9000 reference and the tools like Sigma and 5S are in this top section of the iceberg, the visible stuff, the stuff people can see and comprehend. However, you have to go much deeper to succeed with a TQM approach. You have to ensure your model aims to change the culture and perceptions throughout your whole organisation.

Context is so important, and I am sure you are on the right track with your approach, but don't forget you should make sure your management support you and you involve everyone.
