Training department ideas and development for automotive supplier

Hello all,
I have started a new career in automotive industry as training leader for people on the assembly lines - manufacturing wiring harnesses. As for me, this is very new field I need guidance about the topic.
How do you think the training department should work? We have theoretical and practical areas, but seems that they are not enough useful to prepare good operators. How can I change them, to make them work better? How to motivate the training team, as they are old crew and I'm the new one?
What do you think for you the trainers should do - main tasks, responsibilities? Should it be involved in engineering changes and discussions?
Now theory and practice are separate by days. Do you think to mix them - for instance - theory and then at the same time immediate practice about the given theory? Now all the operators learn about all process in the beginning of the theory. Do you find that useful, or they can learn just about the process they are hired for?
Do you think it will be a good idea?
I will appreciate any books and discussions on the topic?
Thank you in advance for your time.

Hello

good luck in your new endeavors

1 - trainer should explain to assembly operators obviously how to do something and why to do it and the best possible way to do it. (correlates with next point)
2 - trainers should also say when a job is not possible to be done according work standard and speak with engineer for improvement proposals (not many trainers will do this as they don't tend to care)
3 - trainer should pick up tricky jobs and teach operators how to perform them. What is tricky job ? tricky job is the operation where most mistakes are expected and difficult tasks to do
4 - should be involved in engineering changes and discussions because its important to know what he/she will have to teach on the line and make a plan how to do it
5 - you cannot change behavior of old employees. Mission impossible.
6 - combining theory and practice one after another looks ok - but think if you have big groups of people how you will handle them ? how many trainers you have to take this tasks ?
7 - separation of operators for the process they are hired for is ok in my opinion - but again it comes down to how many people you have to work with new hired operators

hope that helps and other people share their thoughts and experience

The new hype is Augmented Reality(AR) & Virtual reality(VR), whether you like it or not it will be the technical part of the future of training. There is no way you can hide. If you want links let me know how much you need and what kind.

Ask the "end customers"(/operators) for feedback what have worked and not, they usualy have a lot of complains, make a gemba walk or something like that. Do the same with the trainers separately, and you might find an interesting cap.

It have become popular to talk about micro and makro learning, not my call but it can work.

What about test and observation, and you need to think about having a support system and how that should work. This include catching experience and use it, FAQ for instance.

Hi Plamena, welcome...especially in the automotive industry the wiring harness, although not the most expensive assy, is in the top 1-3 assy in terms of importance. Without a reliable robust wiring harness, the vehicle operation is compromised. So to your question...visual aides are key...as are destructive and non-destructive tests to validate an operation prior to producing harness/crimped components. Sounds as though you are looking for a training program template for wiring harnesses, I will look around...the training program & were appropriate certifications must be well documented, and maintained...

I think one of the key aspects is to get as you mentioned feedback from operators which were previously trained.

To be honest about the part with Augmented Reality(AR) & Virtual reality(VR) it's not very clear to me how exactly would contribute to the training program or to be a better trainer. Maybe you can give us more hints.

Thank you for the ideas, I had to change my profile. For me starting with the opinion of the operators about the training would work perfectly. Mikael I would love to know how Augmented Reality(AR) & Virtual reality(VR) can be useful at work?
Thank you one more time

Well it can be individual from case to case, but perhaps this could be a start:
How virtual reality is redefining soft skills training

Also look at www.virtualspeech.com, or for meetings where you can share and discuss 3D models look at Spatial.io . There are a lot of others, so just examples, and I don't have any economic interest with these.

Almost everyday there are news within this field and there are like more than 80 XR hardware brands, and examples and cases in most areas rise regularly.
The most common well know brands for XR (AR & VR) are:

AR - Hololens 2 (Microsoft, stand alone)
AR - Magic Leap (semi stand alone)

VR/AR (passthrough) - Varjo , high end high price. You a need a powerfull pc to run it.

AR light - Nreal (use your phone to run it)

AR light - Think reality A3

BTW AR light is popular for audit like purpose, because they are relative cheap, but still have cameras to share your view for collaboration in a production enviroment on a distance.

VR Stand alone (no wires or optional use a link cable) - Oculus Quest 2 (owned by Facebook)

VR - HP Reverb2 - Have good specs and reviews from gamers. The omni version is suited for research purpose since it have sensor that than measure a lot of things.

Traditional VR - HTC vive they are getting old specs wise, but good for business.

VR Pimax - more known for gaming with large field of view(fov) and refresh rate.

Valve index - more known for gaming, popular, high refresh rate.

Could go on but it should be enough to get started, most tech are working on either a VR, AR or hybrid.

New tech on mind control are on popping up, yes control your device handsfree with just your though, it is not science fiction, it is coming, though it is at the early stages and slow. Could be useful in production environments.

I don't know where in the world you are, but for the technical support I suggest that you contact a traditional 3D studios, often they make VR solutions.

There is the gaming approach (fun/not work) and business/serious use. For gaming/private use you might focus on specs of hardware and make a decision, though for business it is more important that you have a studio that support your field and the hardware. For instance the price for Occulus Quest 2 private and business version are very different, and there is a good reason for that.

If you need help to find studios then PM me.

Keep asking :)
