Training Employees to Perform Calibrations / Minor Adjustments to Inspection tools

Good Morning,

Not sure I am in the correct forum but, I am looking for a very basic training program or outfit to help with training individuals to perform calibrations and make minor adjustments to inspection tools.

We only use micrometers, verniers, depth mics, and tape measures - most of the material and programs I see available are overkill for what we need. Maybe we will have to bite the bullet and go through one of those programs.

I am hoping someone is familiar with some type of program or reference that would cover just what we need. I would be interested in either bringing an outfit in, or attempting to train with in-house.

Any suggestions?

I should add we are NOT ISO - currently complying with MIL-I-45208A

:thanx:

thanks,

Re: Training Employees to Perform Calibrations / Minor Adjustments to Inspection tool

Hello there!

I am wondering what level of training are you looking for? With this new group of technicians, do you have a senior technician that might can train everyone else?

Some ideas come to mind:

  • Contact your local ASQ section and see if there is someone who is proficient calibrating the instruments.
  • Do you have a customer/vendor that might have someone who is an expert with working with the equipment?
  • Is there a local competent vendor that you could hire to come in and do a couple of hours training? You might can ask to video tape it, and then you can use it for training later.
Most of the instruments that you listed are not overly difficult to adjust. Some (like calipers) may not be economical to adjust anyway. I would start out with getting a good procedure in place. There are some sources that you might can get a procedure from, including GIDEP.

Here is a thread that has a couple of procedures that might be a good start:

Calibration SOP (warning LONG) - Seeking simple procedure

A good start is to assure you have a decent procedure that is in alignment with industry practices. Next, spend some time in training that everyone understands, and is approaching it consistently.

Hope something helps.

Please further explain what did you mean with "Minor adjustments". What kind of adjustments do you have in mind? Is this something beyond what could be a simple comparison to gage blocks and cleaning or visual checks?

Re: Training Employees to Perform Calibrations / Minor Adjustments to Inspection tool

thanks for the responses -

I do have a call into the local ASQ chapter for assistance, but i really didn't think of customers! I have tried a couple vendors that we use, but they aren't interested.

Minor adjustments would simply mean making minor adjustments to a micrometer if it were outside our accepted tolerance range. Using an adjustment key to rotate the barrel. We also can adjust the plates on several of our verniers to bring them into our tolerance range.

I have experience in doing all of this, and have since past this responsibility on to another individual. I have never had any formal training, I am not comfortable with me being the trainer for this individual, with respect to the area of inspection tools.

Best suggestion is to have an accredited calibration lab do your calibrations. As for tapes, unless you just really have a need to cal them, I would put them on a check schedule and move on, spare yourself the time and money.

If you are going to cal internally, then training is by far and away not the only consideration. You need gage blocks calibrated by an accredited lab, and reporting the uncertainty, you need for the equipment you mentioned a controlled environment for the calibration (68 Deg F), you must document the traceability chain and calculate measurement uncertainty for the calibration to be considered traceable, plus the training.

You may well be correct about the training course, but that is OK because remember Metrology is one of the three oldest recorded sciences on the planet. That is why the training courses are what they are, because of the necessary grounding that must be taught in order to do calibration.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Hershal :agree1:

BTW, I understand why from ancient times calibration has been important for human kind as it relates to day to day commerce and construction. I am just curious as to what are the other "two oldest recorded sciences", I guess Astronomy, Architecture or Medicine can be among the other two, but I would like to know
