If you are using vernier calipers then I would ask the manufacturer for their calibration procedure. Use it to design you procedure and you should be OK.

We did not use calipers in my last place of employment so I am unsure if there is an ASTM standard for them.

I have a follow up question on calibration. We were just instructed from the powers that be to no longer have our shipping scale calibrated. Is this an issue in a TS audit? We only do some cycle or wht counting with the scale, can we write it out of our calibration required measuring tools?

I have another situation here. My company wants to do internal calibration of our scales following the manufacturer's operations' manual. Is that sufficient enough as far as traceability is concern?

The issue with traceability is with the standard that you use to perform the calibration. Can you trace the weights to a national or international standard.

Thanks for your reply. What we will do is to buy a set of calibration weights from the scale manufacturer. I checked from their website and it shows that their set of weights are traceable to NIST or ASTM. I think this is valid enough. By the way, we are certified to ISO 9001:2008 standard.

The standard we use for calibration on calipers is DIN 862.

Thanks for your reply. What we will do is to buy a set of calibration weights from the scale manufacturer. I checked from their website and it shows that their set of weights are traceable to NIST or ASTM. I think this is valid enough. By the way, we are certified to ISO 9001:2008 standard.

You will need to ensure that they are calibrated in the future. You can decide on the frequency based on use, but you need to make a decision and document this in your calibration system.
There are a number of levels of accuracy of scales depending on their use, define your accepted error, this is also dependent on the use and common sense.
ISO 9001 does not require the use of an accredited laboratory for external calibration

Get rid of the from the system entirely. Nice and simple. You can still use them but they are not calibrated instruments they are 'indication aids'. Label them accordingly in big writing on the boxes or attached labels 'For indication purposes only'. And you can also do the same with any gauges you have where you customer does not require yearly calibration.
