TS 16949 Clause 5.1.1 Process Efficiency

TS 5.1.1 says "Top management shall review the product realization processes and the support processes to assure their
effectiveness and efficiency."

Is this somehow different than one of the required management review inputs in:

5.6.2 Review input
The input to management review shall include information on
a) results of audits,
b) customer feedback,
c) process performance and product conformity,

Yes, ISO 9001:2008 talks about effectiveness; ISO/TS 16949:2009 adds the word "efficiency" to it. I believe "efficiency" was added because automotive customers are interested in the financial health of their suppliers, and efficiency (no waste) has an immediate effect on the organization's bottom-line and financial performance. Some claim that this provides an opportunity for automotive customers to request demand price reductions...:notme:

I agree with Jan above - in many cases they are different, but if the organization determines that efficiency is part of the performance measures for the process then there could be an overlap. Here's how ISO defines the terms:
ISO 9000:2005 said:
effectiveness
extent to which planned activities are realized and planned results achieved

efficiency
relationship between the result achieved and the resources used

I sometimes explain the difference by using driving a car example: Effectiveness is similar to completing a trip on time. Efficiency is similar to doing this with good gas mileage. :D
