TS 16949 Planning Phase: Raw Materials purchased from Distributer and the PPAP impact

Hi Folks.

We are looking at TS 16949 and were reviewing the PPAP requirements through the manual. Table 3.1 in the PPAP manual refers to Customer Notification. Point 5 indicates a new PPAP is required for Parts, Non-equivalent materials, or services.

We are not a big fish and therefore rely on purchasing of raw materials (e.g. steel) from multiple sources (Distributers).

Can you clarify what would constitute a new PPAP submission with materials vs. suppliers? Obviously, a grade change is understandable but what about a Distributor change? If this is the case, we would need to re-PPAP every 3-4 months...

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
just to get a bit of clarity on your supplier situation:
Does the material (e.g. steel) come from the same manufacturing source via different distributors?
Do the distributors affect the product in any way?

If your answers are 'yes' and 'no', you'll get the PPAP from the manufacturer via the distributor (or directly).
If it's 'yes' and 'yes' or 'no' and 'yes', the PPAP will come from the distributor.

Hope it helps

Book world vs. Real world.

Technically, if you're going by the book you'll need a PPAP from each distributor (an down to their distributor).

But in the real world, steel is produced by literally a handful of mills and distributed by thousands of distributors. You don't want to PPAP every distributor. And if you ask a mill for a PPAP you'll probably be laughed at. So you're stuck.

Like you we purchase steel from several distributors. Unless the customer really needs it, we generally don't get a PPAP from them. So far, mill certification, inspection and approval have been enough. Good luck.

I second that with the golden rule:
Check the details with your customer.

Fingers crossed you reach an agreement that makes it suitable for both parties:agree:
