TS16949 Consultancy - What should I expect from a TS16949 Consultant?

OK - enough horror stories about bad consultants and resultant "I'm innocent" balderdash. Let's get back on topic and show this Cover and all subsequent visitors the RIGHT WAY to select a worthy consultant and keep control once hired.

I would ask the consultant to focus and evaluate the areas of the Standard that comprise the majority of the Quality System.

1.) Internal Auditing
2.) APQP
3.) New Product Development / Engineering
3.) Non-Conforming Product
4.) CAPA System
5.) Training Matrix
6.) Product Traceability

I would comprise a template / analysis of where you believe you are in relationship to the Standard with what you currently have, then, let the consultant have access to all available resources and put together a comprehensive comparison in a presentation.
I believe that this will be a cascade process for you - the consultant will not be able to bring you up to speed in areas that you lack in 5 days, however, come up with perhaps a rollout timeline, or Gantt chart of how to go about implementation based on the recommendations that are given. Maybe more focus & training in certain areas. Then, measure your success through set metrics that you develop during your intial consultation.

Can anyone help me out? my company has asked for a TS16949 consultant to come in for 5 days to access the situation.: However it has been left up to me to tell this guy what i want him to look at. As this guy should already be pretty profficient at his job should he not be telling me what i need to do to get the system up and running? has anyone got any suggestions this whole thing is starting to worry me

Any worthy, experienced consultant will have some formal approach to guide you through implementation. It shouldn't be 'cookie cutter' (or is that biscuit cutter?) but should be tailored to suit your orgainzation and what already exists.

As Jim correctly posted, one of the first things to do is a gap assessment to determine what systems are already in place, what is 'new' or different and what needs to be worked on, because it's not effective.

The consultant should be able to show you a template or similar plan of the basic steps necessary to close these gaps (I use a simple 5 'phase' approach) to which dates can be set, and assigments given.

If you have reservations about your current support, I can give you a recommendation for an excellent TS consultant based in the UK who can supply you with all the things mentioned here.

I would suggest the most important thing to look for is a consultant who clearly understands the methods needed to align, measure and optimize processes. Many consultants know the TS standard, but are weak in this area.

And, most obvious, he must know how to evaluate your organization to determine what your greatest needs are.
