TS16949 registration for non-automotive suppliers

The rumors abound and I have one from a company I recently spoke with. Can a non-automotive supplier register to TS16949? Rumor has it that registrars have been told by the big three not to register an organization unless it is in the automotive supply chain. Any info/comments/input?

The rumors are true. There must be an unbroken chain from the OEM customer to the organization.

We are manufacturing and supplying Aluminum foil and its products such as House Wrap or Kitchen Wrap to many customers We are an ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 Certified company.
Among various our customers , Visteon is also our customer for foil which is to be used in radiators. I would like to ask Is It mandatory for us to go for ISO/TS 16949:2002. If yes Why and what is the dead line?

Manoj,
Refer to TS2 para 7.4.1.2 and read from your customers point of view.

Sam,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if that information is "officially" documented anywhere that I could tell my client to look?

7.4.1.2 never intended to go for mandatory . I feel 7.4.1.2 says 9001:2000 is mandatory as supplier QMS developement, and not ISO/TS 16949:2002 as mandatory.
