wrekin - it's important to remember that just because it's 'traditional' doesn't make it right or valuable. remember too that it's traditional in the AIAG manual - there are many industries that don't subscribe to the automotive dictates or guidelines.

my personal opinion derived from years of experience is that measuring one part 50 times and calculating a p value for Normality of the measurement error is overkill for the information that the study provides. BUT it does statisfy 'scorecard' people who need to check that box off...

Bev/Statdoug,

So what is a good and useful approach to accomplishing 'traditional' type 1 study goals (or is the target more lofty?)? Is it a multiple parts scenario? Do we have a sheet somewhere setup to evaluate multiple parts and maybe some help in interpreting results?

Thx!

the whole intent of a type 1 study is just a quick look at the measurement error for a gage part combination when you only have 1 or very few parts to measure and are tryign to select the best option for gaging. It is not intended - or structured - to be more informative than that.

I think of it like a quick dock audit or test drive: the only real answers are either it is horribly bad or not horribly bad.

full MSAs with multiple parts and operators are intended to give the more informative - and useful - answer on the effectiveness of a measurement system.

in my experience, for a type 1 study, 1 or even 2 parts measured 5 to 15 times is sufficient. you cannot really assess Normality of the measruement error with only a couple of parts, adn more importantly the Normality of the errro is irrelevant so why worry about it?
