Type 1 GRR (Gage R&R) on a One Sided Specification

Hi,

First time post so please be gentle. I want to do a Type 1 GRR using one part tested by one operator 30 times on a test measurement system. The actual measurement on the product has a one sided spec (i.e. greater than 40).

How do I interpret the results from minitab for this Type 1 GRR because there is no Cg/Cgk or %Var (repeatability) values due to having this one sided spec.

It is interesting - I am confused about your question because the MSA Manual gives no alternate guideline for one-sided specs. The GR&R process was simply designed to learn how close your measurement instrument read to the target (bias), how well it performed over a range (bias linearity) and how well the correct measurement could be performed over and over by different people, etc. (Reproducibility). Whether your tolerance is plus-or-minus or only plus makes no difference. This is about the gage, not the spec.

What I am trying to do is determine whether or not the gage is capable of making these measurements precisely (repeatability) before I introduce other variables such as operators and parts. When we have a double sided specification for the process, then one can calculate the "capability" or Cg of the measurement gage with respect to the tolerance. However, how would one do this if the specification is one sided for the process measurement?

As Jennifer correctly states, the MSA manual makes no mention of one sided specifications.

This is how minitab calculates its stats for a 1 sided specification.

here's an alternative approach and how you can use Minitab to do it:
make a histogram of your measurements.
place the single specification on the histogram (vertical line).
superimpose the distribution of your process.

now look at the amount of measurement error in relationship to the actual process location in reference to the specification.

Think about it: is the measurement error in it's best form small enough to make you comfortable with accepting the results if you were to use to accept/reject parts? That is your answer.

Sometimes in our attempt to simplify decisions with 'statistics' we make things far more complicated...
