Re: UN Class 5 tolerances - Thread setting plug gauge 7/8-9 UNC 5

Hi again Jerry,
I am looking for thread SETTING plug tolerances.
Regarding class 5 threads, here, there, you can find some info, but for the set plugs......
:frust:
Do not get frustrated, there are many experts here on the subject and someone will certainly be able to help you. Gordan Clarke and Gauge guy are the two experts you may contact.

Re: UN Class 5 tolerances - Thread setting plug gauge 7/8-9 UNC 5

I am looking for thread SETTING plug tolerances. Regarding class 5 threads...
This is not as hard as it sounds.

The current standard for this thread is: ANSI/ASME B1.12 CLASS 5 INTERFERENCE FIT THREAD. The most recent revision is: B1.12-1987(R2003). The standard can be purchased from any of a number of Authorized Engineered Standards Resellers.

I believe that the base thread call-out per the standard is: 7/8-9 NC 5. The product threads have additional modifiers (HF; CSF; ONF; IF; INF) following the thread designation which relate to the product material. These modifiers do not relate to the thread gages.

To generate the data for the set plug gages I would do the following: a) Identify the pitch diameters for the ring gages from B1.12. For the 7/8”-9 NC-5 the Pitch Diameters are: 0.8144”/0.8095”. b) Use ThreadTech Software to engineer the set plug requirements. Select the UN-series menu selection. The software offers choice: X or W gage tolerance. When prompted for what data to use, use choice ‘C’ to use the pitch diameters. You even get a choice of thread wire size. The resulting data will not be listed as 7/8”-8 NC-5 because it is not a recognized option in the software, but the data is that for which you search.

Attached is the print-out for 7/8”-9 NC-5 Class X Truncated Set Plug Gages just as it is printed from ThreadTech Software. <--Click link for free 30-day trial.

I hope this was helpful.:agree1:

Re: UN Class 5 tolerances - Thread setting plug gauge 7/8-9 UNC 5

Thank you Wayne!

If it is not too much, I do have some questions....

1)The standard is B1.12-1987 (I will buy it this week), but this standard actually, gives you the dimension and tolerance for the set plug, class 5 UN threads ???
You have the standard, but you have calculated the thread, starting from the ring dimension.

So again, is there any standard that will give you the dimensions (and tolerances) for set plugs class 5?

2) Me too, I am using a software in determining the thread dimensions, best wire size, etc., but the problem with this software is that is limited to classes 1,2 and 3.
Does you software calculate class 5 threads?

Thank you again, Wayne!:thanx:

I admit to not owning a copy of B1.12. That being said, I cannot accurately answer your question. I ASSUME that B1.12 will give you information about the product threads but not give you information about the gage parameters. You will know for sure when you purchase the standard. I expect that B1.12 will point you to B1.2 for gage parameters because the thread is essentially a UN-series thread. I used ANSI B1.2 guidelines for calculating the gages.
... you have calculated the thread, starting from the ring dimension.
Ring gage pitch diameters = set plug gage pitch diameters = minimum/maximum product pitch diameters.

I am using a software in determining the thread dimensions, best wire size, etc., but the problem with this software is that is limited to classes 1, 2 and 3. Does you software calculate class 5 threads?
Sounds like you want to upgrade to a more versatile software. I prefer the ThreadTech software because of its versatility and ease of use. However the ThreadTech software does not have an option for class-5 threads, but the specific option is not needed if the pitch diameters are known. The ThreadTech software will work directly from the pitch diameters, regardless of the specified class-of-fit.

Again, I hope this helps some.

Re: UN Class 5 tolerances - Thread setting plug gauge 7/8-9 UNC 5

Gentlemen,

Unfortunaely, I still consider the problem unsolved...

Thanks to Wayne, I know that I can calculate the required dimensions (tolerances?) sarting from the ring gauges.

So far, I have a software showing me all the dimensions for classes 1,2,3. I have found tables for Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Nothing with class 5.

H28/23 sends me to section 11 of B1.12 and again, as per H28, the gaging should be in accordance with H28/6, except that gage dimensions shall be specified in B1.12-1987.

It seems like today I will receive the B1.12, so maybe I will be able to find the dimensions (and tolerances) for set plugs, UN class 5 threads.

Please be sure to return and tell us what you have found once you receive your copy of B1.12.

Sorry to hear that your problem is not yet resolved. As suggested in my earlier post#11, Godan Clarke is another expert who might be able to help you. Send him a PM since he has not seen this thread, else he would have definitely chimed in.

Hi Umang,

I have already contacted Clark and it seems like his area of expertise is threadind, not thread gaging, so he pointed Wayne as being the master of this topic.

I am going to check the B1.12 and I hope that I will find an answer, that of course Wayne, I am going to share it with everybody.

:)

Re: UN Class 5 tolerances - Thread setting plug gauge 7/8-9 UNC 5

:biglaugh:

Gentlemen,

I did not read the entire standard, but after a very quick check, the tolerances for the thread setting plugs (rings) class 5, can be admired :D at page 25, Table 12, ASME/ANSI B1.12-1987.

My best regards!

It happens more often than not, that we miss the obvious right in front of our nose. Anyway, better late than never, I am happy you found the solution. This is how persistense pays the reward.:applause:
