Hello Forum members, I am on the internal audit team at our company and the lead auditor has us doing an internal audit of for Monitoring and measurement of processes. What I have been tasked with is related to one of our objectives and goals of Continual improvement of all aspects of the Quality Management System. The goal they set is a dollar value goal. And they have outlined the details of the objective as "the continual improvement metric is captured though reduction of costs to the company through many projects. These costs can be determined either thought a reduction of an annual expense or reduction of time required to manufacture or process and order." Any suggestions on what I should be auditing or looking at. I have reviewed the documents that are presented at the management review meeting b ut I persoannly cant wrap my head around how he various kaizen projects they have noted have anything to do with the QMS Processes.

Welcome to the Cove! You'll get a lot of answers I'm sure.

I have a question or two... You mention that you have a "Lead Auditor", so what does this person suggest? I'm interested to see that you are auditing an element of the standard not a process, as such, so are you auditing a process as well as measuring and monitoring of process(es)?

Welcome to the Cove. It sounds to me like your confusion is a result of someone else's. :bigwave: If what you describe is what you've been given as audit criteria, there's probably no way to do an audit that will be helpful or make any sense.

I would go to the lead auditor and and ask what process(es) you're supposed to audit. Ask for explicit direction as to what the audit output should look like.

Jim,

thanks for your input, I planned on talking to the lead auditor to see what kind of output he was looking for. We had out talk this afternoon and now what he is looking for is for me to talkt o departments within the company and see what kind of processes they ae doing for continual improvement or if they are even doing anything.

Interesting - so it doesn't sound like an audit... Did the LA tell you what criteria you should use to audit against? I'm still a little concerned about the whole idea of this audit! Going along for a chat isn't an audit and why doesn't the LA just ask what's going on? If they are supposed to be using DMAIC for the CI process, then you can audit that, but with no idea what they are supposed to be doing, what's the point of an audit?

Andy,

Sorry for my not knowing but what does DMAIC mean?
I know some of our departments do have kaizen Projects inwhich employees are submitting these items and somehow one of the IE's are putting a value ot that and this infomraiton is recorded and submitted during the Quarterly MRM but all of our departments are not involved in the program at this time.

My apologies! It's the 6 Sigma methodology "Define", "Measure", "Analyze" "Improve", and "Control".

I have audited Kaizen improvements and found that, often, they completely overlook the QMS. I could tell you a wonderful story about a great Kaizen which fell flat, due to NOT 'binding' the improvements to the QMS!:notme:
