Understanding ISO 26262 Road Vehicle Functional Safety

My organization is into software development/services & has recently ventured into Automotive software. We are trying to understand ISO 26262 Road vehicles Functional safety.

On ISO store there are 10 different documents right from vocabulary to guidelines under ISO 26262, we are not too sure which one to go for. Our first aim is to make the management system & processes aligned with the requirement wherever gaps would exist. Any help or your comments /advice would be great.

You don't go for "1" document. ISO26262 is a system level certification.

eg/ an ABS ECU system (System, Hardware and software used) will get the certification per ECU design/model. The level of certification and how much headache you will have to meet it, depends on the level of safety required. A braking system will have ASIL-D, worst of the worst.

As a vendor, you can only partner up with a system designer/manufacturer as their system level requirement will fan into you software requirements. The outputs and validation/testing/etc, will be an output that fans back into system level proof.

There is an ISO26262 chapter that discuses software requirement BUT there are other elements in other chapters that will apply so you cannot just read 1 and be done with it.

There may be some ways of lessening /declaring it not being applicable to you business but not being a software house, I didn't pay to much attention to this part. I believe COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) Software may not apply but it you designed propotols like CAN software you maybe able to prove its rating on a reference design.

ISO26262 is different from TS16949 in that it assumes the QS is already there. Things you'll need to do differently is have a Functional Safety Manager and work out how you architect for safety validation, and potentially real time checking in the system. In a nutshell, it is a nightmare in that you need to be a hybrid of system/design/applications/reliability to understand it all.
