Upgrading from ISO9001:2000 to AS9120 - Difficulties?

Hello.

Our company is currently ISO9001:2000 registered. We are in the industrial distribution industry. One of our customers may require us to upgrade to AS9120.

For those that may have experience with this, I'm curious on how difficult the upgrade is? I realize this is a bit of a subjective question, but I'm just looking for a general idea. Our established ISO9001:2000 system if fairly mature and we generally have few issues during our continuing assessment audits.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Re: Difficulty of upgrading ISO9001:2000 to AS9120?

If your organization already warehouses and distributes aerospace hardware and it is familiar with the regulatory regime to operate as an aerospace distributor, compliance to AS9120 should not be overly challenging for you.

Have you read AS9120 yet?

No, so far I have not read it specifically, just general information about it.

We're just beginning to evaluate whether we will do it or not. As part of that, I was just looking for some feedback (aside from that of sales folks at the registrars) on the complexity of implementation.

Well you have arrived to the Cove and welcome. :bigwave:

Sidney is one of the Experts here in the cove and also works for a Registrar. If you ask Him specific questions he will be very helpful.

Thanks Coury, but I am not qualified since I belong to the category of sales folks from a Registrar....

Well, I'm not in sales nor do I work for a registrar. We are, however, transitioning one of our plants from ISO9100:2000 to AS9100.

Sidney is spot on in my book. It should be no extreme challenge for you. Get and read the standard. AS is based on and includes ISO9001:2000 so the only thing you have to worry about is the aerospace specific requirements.

BTW, when it comes to asking questions - ask away. I will vouch for Sidney's ability to give you unbiased answers.

I have been involved with three organizations that have went from ISO9001 to AS9100 and each time we started by developing an AS9100 implementation team which in turn did a "gap analysis" against the AS9100 specification.

We then revised procedures to meet the new requirements and had training and more traiming to ensure everyone knew what AS9100 was and how it affected their jobs and what procedures had change and then we did internal audits to ensure the new procedures were followed and then if necessary more training.

This was done based on using and sticking to a timeline driven and supported by the BOD.

Best of luck!

Hi,

I have had the lovely experience of implementing ISO900:2000 then upgrading to AS9100 and then onto AS9120.

The biggest question is do you already work for aerospace companies and hold approvals by them? If you do then you probably already have a lot of the processes in place that they will ask of you.

These relate to traceability of product, batch control, production planning, management of non-conformance and non-conforming product, record retention and the like.

If you have these in place already then the transition will be pretty straight forward. If however you are starting from no aerospace exposure then there may be a few new tricks to learn on the way.

Overall I would say that the AS9120 document is pretty straight forward to understand and to implement. It is much the same as the AS9100 doc but with sections taken out that don't apply. It also gives specific requirements for record retention and others that AS9100 leave more to your assessment.

Tips would be to have a good read of the documents and find an assessor who has actually implemented with others before - there are not that many who have. And of course ask any questions you want.

The tip before about using gap analysis is what we have done with all of our implementations. It will give you a good idea of the size of task you have and what type of help you will need. Also gives you a good project plan for the implementation.

Hope you enjoy the experience.

Peter

Re: Upgrading from ISO9001:2000 to AS9100

Hello Cove,

The company I work for is currently working towards ISO certification, hoping to be certified in a couple months, and has mentioned the idea of pursuing AS9100 after that. Does anyone have any thoughts on how long we should let the new ISO system settle before attempting to move ahead with AS9100?

It is probably important to mention that the ISO system has been somewhat of a "culture shock" for certain employees and I believe it would be smart (and probably critical to success) that we wait for buy-in to be more universal and everyone's comfort level with the current system (which has not been in place very long) is higher before altering the system too much. I was thinking of waiting until after our first maintenance audit one year after certification. Any opinions?

Thanks,
-Chris

Chris,

I think you would be better off waiting for the first year. I do not know what your interaction with Aerospace is and why you want to add this your ISO, but get a copy of the standard and review it. Review the preview post and you will have some good information to guide you.
