Upkeep of ISO 9001:2008 during Transition TO ISO 9001:2015

We are a small machine shop and have applied to transfer our 9001 certification to another body. We are in the process of transitioning to 2015, the new documents have been rolled out, new audit schedule etc. They have advised us that a transfer audit will need to be carried out for the 2008 standard (certificate expires in March), followed by a transition audit for the 2015 standard. They have set 3 days for all of this to be completed in the first week of Feb 2018.

My question is, if we are now working to the 2015 standard, are we supposed to be running the 2008 standard alongside it, so we can meet their transfer audit requirements. This would mean 2 QMS', 2 audit schedules, 2 lots of documents.

Should I be responding to them to say we are now running to the 2015 standard and that the transfer audit for the 2008 certificate will not be applicable; Therefore we would like them to complete the 2015 transition audit and re certification only?

I must stress, that the processes that were currently set for 2008 version were in place before my time at the company. I have worked to reduce these into a more manageable amount and therefore some of the documents have significantly changed.

Don't know who you're using but the process sounds kinda dumb, I just did a transition combined with an annual surveillance conducted as a single audit, the only differences being some additional time for the transition (1/2 surveillance duration) and of course everything to ISO 9001:2015). So far I've done well over a dozen of the things, no big deal. The surveillance and transition each have a separate control number but there's one plan, one report, no muss, no fuss.

Also, why 2 different sets of records/documents, that's no too swift either. What has changed that requires 2 different document sets?:nope: So far every single audit I've done has not required any changes in documentation or structure (and I've done some major places as well as smaller locations as you seem to be).

Quit drinking the Koolaid and keep it simple, if someone told you horror stories about all the changes, document creation, hoop jumping and all that other dribble, toss 'em out on their but(t).

What Randy said.

There is little to nothing in the 2008 version that the 2015 version does not have - the language has changed in some cases. Please do not over-complicate this.

The problem we have had is that although the original version met all of the 2008 requirements, the business has changed some what in the last 12 to 18 months. The documentation has simply been updated to meet the new standard, same information where necessary, however the sheer number of things that were defined as processes were simply unmanageable with the evolving business, these have now been reduced and a lot of the previous processes ring fenced into a more manageable size.

So should i be informing my new CB that they should be simply be auditing us to the 2015 version?

Your CB will be auditing to the 2015 version. I don't know any who audit to both versions at the same time.

Operational controls (most procedures) don't change. Calibration doesn't change. So much has not functionally changed that I want to encourage you not to overthink this.

Thankyou,

Spoke to CB, have clarified the situation and they have cancelled the transfer audit. Simple re certification audit to the new standard now.
