Here's a partial snap shot of some of the progs I use to keep things moving on one of my systems.
JSW05 is right when saying XP can be a problem when cleaning the registry. Get to know what is running in your task manager though, if you don't quite have the knowledge of the running processes, you may wish to access this site for a better knowledge of processes that may run on your PC. I'm looking for a free utility that would perform a deep scan for rogue files associated with trojans and key loggers.
I currently use AVG, Sygate and JV16 tools: I think  my system is good yet, I do get an uneasy feeling now and then about system integrity :frust:
Peace of mind would be a nice place to be in ;)

While I'm typically not a huge fan of Microsoft's reliability. They have a Spyware scanner which is really good. Still using various utilities (Ad-aware, Spybot, Hijackthis, etc.) the program is really effective. It can be downloaded for free.

My favorite freebies:

FireFox - No explanation needed hopefully

Thunderbird - Email compliment to Firefox

Everest - I have installed it on every computer I touch. Gets any info from a system you need, down to dates and S/N's of components!

ZoneAlarm - Ditched it when I went to DSL and a Linksys Router, but used it for years before.

Winzip - Shareware I guess but I still count it.

AVG - Just started using after reformatting my laptop (finally got wife her own & was easier than removing all the spyware).

LviewPro - I still have the 16 bit version from 1993. Great little image viewer, one simple file, I believe it was only around 150kb or so.

You should still be using a software firewall, especially one such as ZA that will monitor outbound traffic, imo. Your hardware firewall is great for stuff trying to get in from the outside, but it's possible to inadvertently install, for example, spyware that tries to "phone home." ZA will alert you to that sort of thing, but the hardware firewall won't.

Funny thing is, I know this. I even tell other people the same thing. But being a networking "newbie" (just got DSL a few weeks ago) I took it out completely with the intentions of restarting it but never did.

I should try to re-start it I guess, and make sure the wife can get thru the WAP at least.....

I use a lot that were already mentioned. Here's a few more good ones with broad appeal:

- Spambayes: free Bayesian anti-spam filter add-in for Outlook (http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/).

- CutePDF Writer: free utility that emulates a printer to create PDF files. Select it from your available printers dropdown in the print dialog, and it will create a PDF file from anything.

Hi Wallace,

I've tryed a lot of sweepers and cleaners and other programs.
At one point I had about 9 programs scanning and sweeping and I lost track on whats doing what.
Now I'm using Hitman-pro :agree1:
This program uses al kind of free cleaning programs and gets practically everything out!!!
It works realy GREAT and I threw away al those trailversions and other crappy half working programs.
I'll try to attach it, otherwise follow this link:
www.hitmanpro.nl/
Though its is in dutch just follow "download" on the right
It also has English language etc..

Good luck cleaning up.
:magic:

Bye
