Using a Parent Corporation's Environmental Policy Statement

Several big F500 companies have developed one corporate policy statement which applies to all of their sites. I have never run across an auditor who has a problem with it, because the policy was developed, agreed to and endourced by the company's board of directors and is accountable to the CEO. The different plants all have to work to mold their 14001 programs around the policy, but as general as most are, it doesn't create much of an issue.

In a way, I kinda like a corporate policy. It shows commitment from the top down.....However.....

If I were in charge, each site would have a site addendum to the policy that puts the ownership on the site management. This way the organization shows buy-in from both corporate and local levels and the policy can be more reflective of both the corporate and local organizations.

We have both a general, corporate policy and a site specific one. I have no influence over the contents of the corporate document so I treat it as one of the "other requirements to which the organization subscribes" (4.2c, 4.5.2.2 etc).

A good idea I suppose, but it sounds like a lot more work to maintain two environmental policies. I guess I just like to keep things as simple as possible.

I appreciate your concern but it's really no more work. The people who set the corporate policy are in a different country (and maybe even on a different planet?) and don't talk to peasants like me. I have to comply with their policy so it has to be in the system but it's the local document which gives the real detail. If I comply with the local policy, I automatically comply with the corporate requirement.
