COVID-19 is the latest of a series of pandemics that have moved business contingency planning to the level of good-sense business planning. I have worked in periods of Bird Flu, Swine Flu, and now COVID-19 (the longest and most severe of all; I have been working from home since March). We've had hurricanes and ice storms. I have had clients who must second-source hydrogen peroxide when a hurricane moves through the Gulf Coast. Another client made plans to shift transportation in the event of a labor strike among the coastal Longshoremen.
It makes sense to prepare by taking a range of actions, starting with contractual clauses, to using various strategies to reduce personnel exposure so as to preserve the manpower readiness, to ensuring the cleanliness of the product you sell.
You can ask yourselves the hard question of which processes fell short in what way, and make appropriate changes. You cannot control events or nature, only how you prepare to deal with it.
