# Value Stream Mapping Calculations

Hi all!

I was running a training session on Value Stream Mapping. We calculated a value add time of 10 minutes and a non-value add time of 45 minutes. As a result 22.22% of time within the process is value add.

However, one of the students asked what would be the meaning if the value add time was 45 minutes and non-value add time was 10 minutes. Is it correct to say the process would be 350% over-processing?

Any help is welcome!

Re: Value Stream Mapping calculation

You are making a mistake in the calculation of the percentage.

The original state is 10/(10+45) = 0.18 = 18%

The other scenario is 45/(10+45) = 0.82 = 82%

Thanks for the correction in calculation. So what do the two values mean?

A good sense I would ask you that question

So what do you think the numbers mean?

I get it I think, moment of being silly. The first state only provides 18% of VA time, whilst the second is 82%.

Thank you, where did you get the formula by the way?

The formula is just the standard formula for calculating a percent. In this case it is the value add time (VA) divided by the total time (VA + NVA).

The following link provides an example. The article calls it Process Cycle Efficiency.
