Verifying there is no indirect requirement for lab certification in ISO9001

Before I make a fool of myself in a job application, I want to confirm something. I am familiar with ISO9001/AS9100.

I am applying for a job with a company where the job description says lab certification and lab protocols are a “far reaching requirement of ISO9001.” The company makes high end computing hardware and software and is targeting self-driving cars as one of its markets (along with AI). The company’s website does not list conformance to any standards although the job description has several references to ISO9001.

Based on everything I know, there is no requirement in ISO9001 for lab certification, even indirectly.

What common standards require lab certification? ISO 17025? IATF16949?

Am I right in assuming one or more of the following occurred:
  • An auditor incorrectly made the company think lab certification and lab protocols was a ISOS9001 requirement.
  • Someone, possibly a customer, incorrectly made the company think this.
  • The company is moving towards compliance with a standard that does require lab certification and the person writing the job description mixed things up.

There are "labs" and there are "labs". You mention self-driving cars and my immediate thought is that the "lab" will not be one where chemicals are involved, but more likely an Engineering Development Lab. You are correct in your statement about ISO9001 and lab certification. The issue of what is a lab and what additional standards may apply to it is something that you can bring up in interview questions, hoping that you get that far in the application process. Good luck !

It's gibberish.

IATF 16949 may be involved and that does have a requirement for lab certification.
I'm not sure, the use of "should" and "may" is used but not "shall" when looking at 7.1.5.3.1 I think. There is no absolute requirement I believe.

I hope this employer's job description does not accurately portray their general knowledge of QMS. It is true that most people don't understand the details or nuance of the standards, but they could have asked for help - if there was someone to ask.

I would find a way to learn how much they understand, or you may discover greater challenges ahead of you than identifying the ISO 9001 clause requiring lab certifications.

Just my :2cents:
