Version/Revision Control of CAD files

Hi All,

My team is currently using Inventor to create and update CAD files for the components of a Medical Device. However, we are currently unsure about how to version control these.

How do you do you typically keep track of the different versions/revision of CAD files? I read on some forums that creating a copy of the file and changing the title to include the revision is not a good idea as it can cause conflincts when several parts are linked. How else would you suggest doing this?

I wouldn't suggest using Inventor, or any other solid modeling software, without the accompanying vault. I believe that's Autodesk Vault for Inventor. It'll do it all for you. You can possibly use other vaults but it's really best to use the one that was designed for the tool. It's worth the investment, talk to your VAR.

Manual version control of modeling files gets complex and you will likely start losing references to the proper versions of files. I did it once briefly, years ago, but I wouldn't do it again. Design integrity is at stake.

It is possible to control manually; however, it is difficult to find an individual who is knowledgeable enough for this task. I have managed SolidWorks files that contained numbers and revisions. Updates were performed using SolidWorks Explorer. If you do not have a person who can manage this though, a vault could be your solution.
