Wabash Press Calibration - Lab-sized Wasbash Presses

Hi! Does anyone have any experience with lab-sized Wasbash Presses? We have one in our lab that is used to form test specimens of rubber and plastics. The specimens are then tested for flex, modulus, etc.

Our press is coming due for calibration, and the question has been raised as to whether or not we should pay the $4G fee to have this done. My gut tells me that we should, but plastics are out of my area so I can't really make a good case. Can anyone help?

Re: Wabash Press Calibration

That's a tough one. Hopefully someone will be able to give some informed advice. Are there any plastics industry forums out there that you could also post on in case you don't hear anything.

I'm looking now. What worries me is, of course, the effect on the final test results because of variances in thickness etc. Reducing the concern is that usually a group of specimens are made in a group and comparisons are made within that group only. There is also usually a test run on a control within that group, and the control is run whenever that type of material is run.

Still...

My metrologist instincts tell me the following (in absence of someone qualified in this discipline):

These may be thoughts you've already had. So if nothing else, perhaps my input may help confirm your thoughts. Evaluate specs of materials/specimens associated with its use, and how the calibrated specs of the press relate to outgoing product quality. If the calibrated tolerances of the press relate to outgoing product's ability to meet it's specs, then it needs to be calibrated.

If the calibration of the press is a "convenience" (makes it simpler to make specimens that are near correct, but does not ultimately make a decision regarding product final specs), then I'd give it a "maybe."

My ignorant perception is that having the press calibrated associates with the ability to make specimens of known flex, modulus, etc. based on given press parameters; essentially correlating press parameters to specimen parameters. Without the calibration, that association becomes more an unknown.

Yes, Jerry, and thanks for your input. The thing is that I don't know how much effect being out of calibration would have. If we ran the same material on it all of the time it would be different, but we run PVC, nylon, rubber, etc. in this lab, which, in my mind complicates things more.

Since our ISO 9001 audit starts in the morning I am going to do a little more on this today and then pick it back up next week.

Thanks again, Jerry!
