Hi,

I found most of the definitions by searching the forum, however I was not able to find 'waste'

What would be the definition of waste?

Other definitions:

  • Repair - Defined as action that makes the object usable but not to drawing specifications. Requires customer approval.
  • Rework - Defined as action that returns the object back to drawing specifications. Does not require customer approval.
  • Use As Is - Although the item is nonconforming, it can be used because it does not violate the 'Form, Fit and Function 'rule'. May or may not require customer approval. No rework or repair is involved.
  • Scrap - The product cannot be Reworked, Repaired or Used As Is.
  • Sorting - A sort is an inspection (determination of conformity of specified requirements).

In the Toyota Production System (and most Lean approaches) waste is defined as anything that is not directly value add to the product or service being provided to a paying Customer. Waste impedes flow; waste reduces capacity.
(Yes, even necessarry or valuable activity such as inspection in the presence of defects. The point of identifying waste for what it is is intended to spur improvement and reduction of waste to accelerate product to the paying customer, instead of being complacent about the existence of waste.)

Waste is more than unusable material of course, it is typically a waste of time and human action as well as a waste of materials and non-human resources.

Each of the terms you listed are examples of waste.

The 7 traditional wastes:
  1. Overproduction
  2. Excess inventory
  3. Over processing (which would include rework, repair, sorting, inspection, dispositioning and 'controlling' defective material, etc.
  4. Transportation
  5. Excess motion
  6. Waiting
  7. Defects
And the so-called eight waste: human potential

If you think about these wastes you can see that each waste results in the creation of the other wastes...it s a vicious cycle.

A byproduct that is generated and which has to be disposed with or without any treatment.
Apart from this there is wasted power, wasted time, wasted money, wasted resources, wasted manhours, wasted material, and whatever .....

Waste as defined by S.Toyoda "anything other than the minimum amount of equipment, materials, parts, space and workers time which is absolutely necessary to add value to the product." From the sustainability side WASTE is Water, Air, Solids, Toxicity and Energy - an acronym. Same concept as above with the concentration on the elimination of WASTE.
