Wearing an ESD Smock with Rolled Up Sleeves

Hello everyone!

Question about wearing ESD smock

Working in electronics, we all wear the ESD smock. However, several employees wear their sleeves rolled up, as if working in an oily environment (under the hood of a car, working on a motor).

This is annoying. I personally believe that the sleeve should not be rolled up. For me, the coat serves as a Faraday cage and exposure of arms could allow electrostatic discharge. Also valuable for shirt sleeves that exceed smocks? ends (for office workers wearing smocks). Moreover, sleeves often have closing buttons at the ends.
I've already talked to the Production Manager about this but he lacks the theoretical baggage about this issue. Mine is also deficient in this matter, I confess.

The question is: Are the rolled up of smock sleeves undermine its effectiveness, and if so, what evidence or "rational" to support this? e.g. is there a standard that specifically addresses this point?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Question about wearing ESD smock

ESD 20.20 might talk to PPE. Why not ask the manufacturers of the clothes? I doubt if any "standard" is going to be specific enough. But the makers must have done some testing?

Re: Question about wearing ESD smock

Those smocks are generally designed to contain or eliminate static buildup as a result of the rustling of clothes, so exposed arms should not be a problem. If they are, then your coworkers should be wearing ground straps as well.

Definitely check with the manufacturer, though, as Andy suggested. They will likely have all the information you need regarding the proper use of their products.

The smock usually come in two variants--one with a conductive elastic band at the wrist, and those that don't. On the elastic type, as long as the smock sleeve encloses the shirt sleeve fabric underneath and elastic band is in contact with skin it should be ok (a la Faraday cage), but they must be grounded via smock cord, as well as any other required connection, like heel grounders. If it's the non-elastic snap/button sleeve type, they must wear a wrist strap, regardless.
The conductive elastic band at the wrist is what provides the continuity between you and the smock, then the smock cord to the ground monitor; otherwise the wrist strap does it.
(I give myself a 93% chance of being completely right. . . .) :)

Additional edit: The banded smock sleeve may be pushed up, but you indicated they were rolling up the sleeve, and that is a no-no. The band would no longer be in contact with skin.

I worked for a semiconductor manufacturing firm and we were smocks all day long. There are a lot more to be considered for ESD other than the smocks but since it's the issue here I'd say you are correct. It's for static protection of the units that you produce in tandem with the other ESD requirements. I may be able to hook you up with an old training material as ref. Be back here when it's done. Might wanna take a look at these sites for ref also :)
