Army Sergeant on Leave Wins Lottery
FITZGERALD, Ga. (Oct. 2) - An Army sergeant on leave from South Korea claimed the $150 million jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery.
Stephen Moore, 30, had been visiting family during his 30-day leave when he bought the winning ticket at a convenience store.
He said he was out with his brother Tuesday night, and when he returned he found his wife, Danielle, waiting for him.
''She came out the door, and I thought I was in trouble,'' Moore said. ''She said, 'Guess what, we won the lottery!'''
Moore, who works as a chemical specialist, chose the cash option for his winnings and was awarded $88.9 million before taxes on Wednesday.
''I told my mom to go ahead and quit work,'' Moore told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He said he also plans to build a new home for his wife and two daughters.
His mother, Annette Moore Crawford, said she'll keep her job as a clerk at a hardware distribution center, but she said she wouldn't mind having a Mercedes-Benz if her son wants to buy one for her. She also wants one more thing - her son home.
''(President) Bush needs to call my house and tell me my baby don't have to go back to Korea, that he can stay home,'' Crawford, 47, told the newspaper. Moore has been stationed in South Korea for nine months.
Fitzgerald is about 180 miles south of Atlanta.

The interesting thing is Stephen is a cousin of mine. He doesn't know it, but I'm about to tell him. And if I remember correctly, he owes me a couple of thou. :thedeal:

I'm happy for them. But I hear they are gonna ask the armed forces for a release since they no longer need the jobs. Doesn't seem like they should be treated differently than other soldiers just because they got rich. What do the vets here think?

Didn't you win "Poster of the Year"?

Oh wait! That was energy. As I remember, you didn't even make the list. Perhaps if you posted more.

Now, let's revisit the Ex-cop brutality thread. :bonk:

It won't happen. He will do his time. She may be concerned that he will lose his life and never get to spend a dime. But, if she's so concerned, have him put her in his will. Korea isn't a great place to be anytime, but today they have the nuclear maniac threat to the North. Having said that, his chances of becoming a casualty are greater in Tikrit. :(

Someone told me a couple of weeks ago that if a military person wins a lottery that they make them get out. They can't stay. I don't know. That's just what I was told.

That's pretty much the case. They determined that if you won the lottery you wouldn't be dedicated and loyal enough. It might be different with everything going on nowadays though.

Being a vet (and never having won the lottery), I'm not 100% sure but I believe he could get out on somewhat of a "Hardship Discharge". I think it's under the impression that with that kind of $$$ he has to "manage his money" now.

Yeah, real hardship but I've seen more ridiculous discharges from the Navy...
