You can't go wrong with meeting customer expecations. It's really a busniess decision, do you want TS or not. If you have systems in place that are solid and providing the expected results then you are probably right to just sit pat (if the customers are ok with that).

No cert on the wall will ever ensure good quality, your systems and your people will (System + People = Culture). If the culture is high quality strong relationships and high levels of customer service then you will be able to continue and build strong relationships with your customers and gain cusotmer loyalty.

One question though; you said TS is a cost that gives you no benefit. How do you know that? Is it because you are doing automotive work now without it and having it will not get you any more work? Or the added requirements add no value to your organization?

Thank you all for the replies, guidance, advice,

How about QS9000? I think QS9000 in this case is about should be similar to TS16949 ( = ISO9001 + core tool + CSR + etc tool). As I remember we also hace tools like Control-plan, FMEA, SPC, etc in QS9000, right? How about then QS9000 vs TS16949 ?

Thank you very much for your time & advice.

QS-9000 is dead and gone. Replaced by ISO/TS 16949 when ISO 9001:2000 changed the game. It is like comparing chalk and cheese. It did include the tools you mentioned because it was a supplier requirement for the (then) "Big 3". Auto makers in the RoW didn't adopt it.

For us it seems that we are not losing any work or missing out on new opportunities due to not having TS. We are not getting pressure to go for TS and as long as that changes it does not make sense from a business point of view at this stage. Our customers have TS and we do a lot of the elements companies with TS would need to do or ask for of their suppliers.

I do think that since we are probably close to the TS level what the extra steps would be and cost. Certification/external auditing costs I guess. Also management costs here to make the last step. Is it worth it? Just not sure what benefit it offers.

My question is whether there are any benefits to quality going for TS if you fulfil ISO 9001:2008 and customer requirements? If you have systems in place that enable you to meet their requirements with good stability of processes and low defect rate (can you ever guarantee zero defects?). I guess the only possible answer is if not having it means customers pass you by.

I would agree, if you are not being pushed there, and you have a solid ISO system then there really would not be a point to going for it from a strategic advantage point of view. It sounds like you have a mature system that is used and followed as intended. The quality benefits of TS over ISO are none really; it is just how you set up the processes and how you use them. If your doing that with ISO then you are in good shape.

Very little of any of these standards are about part quality, they are about desk quality mostly. Systems set up to help establish processes that produce the intended results, but also include a lot of requirements for how to react when they fail. So you can have the best systems in the world, but they better include effective problem solving, be cause failure is the only guarantee.
