What are the FAI requirements for an assembly? New to AS9102

I am new to AS9102 and the one thing that I do not understand is this.

I have an assembly part number 12345-6.

It is made up of sub assemblies:
67891-0 and 67891-1

Sub assembly part number 67891-0 is made up of parts:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

Sub assembly part number 67891-1 is made up of parts:
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19

If I am reading AS9102 correctly I need to do an FAI for parts:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19

then an FAI on sub assemblies:
67891-0 and 67891-1

Then on final assembly:
12345-6

Or am I off my rocker??

Correct. The only exception is if any of parts 1-19 can be classified as Standard Catalog Hardware as defined in the standard. You don't need to do an FAI for these - they are simply included in your sub-assembly FAI's.

Of course you should start by reading AS9102 cover to cover.

Next the FAIR is created based on customer requirements to do so in the contact with you. It is based on their, not your, drawing requirements. If their drawing only reflects the top level assembly then that is as far as you go and you mark AS9102, Form One, Box 13 as “Assembly FAI”. Boxes 15 through 18 are marked N/A.

Now if they show two components that make up the top assembly on their drawing but they do not have drawings for these components you still perform the FAI as a “Assembly FAI” because the only requirement is that the top assembly contains part “A” and part “B” which you verify on AS9102 Form Three per their drawing. Your customer may still try to get this dimensional information on the two sub-component parts but this information is proprietary and you should not disclose it to them

If customer has also issued sub-component drawings for the top level assembly then you will need to complete FAI’s on sub-components and top level as the have specified their requirements which you must verify via the FAI.

Question,
Do the FAIs that are required on detail parts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc......, require AS9102 Forms 1,2, or can that information be filled in on the top assembly FAI.
I'm sure that form 3 is a definite requirement.

You have the correct basic understanding of the FAI required.
The FAI for each part always needs a form 1 the need for the other forms will depend on the actial design data involved for the part.
IF your assemblies are made from nothing more than catalog parts then you would have a form 2 in addition to your from 1 but would not nessarly need a form 3 in my view but as we know "the more paper the better it must be" so you would be better off to send all 3 forms.

Agreed.
Next, you should confirm with both the customer's drawing requirements and the contract requirements (which hopefully match) for what is actually required by your customer.

If you are still not clear after that, by all means ask the customer for clarification. With your being new to the game, they will understand. They want you to get it right, too.
