My employer just gave me a Blackberry Storm 2, whoo hoo. There certain apps like social networks that have been blocked but I don't use those much anyway. The soft touch keypad is awkward, too. But other that that, seems pretty solid. They have it linked to intercompany email and I have my yahoo mail coming to the phone, too.

This got me thinking, what apps do you use and why?

So far I just have an old cell phone that essentially is only a phone. So - I'm curious what apps people use as well. I'm thinking of an iPhone and and iPad for testing purposes.

I use Android 2.2 (Nexus One), which I believe has many more apps available than the blackberry OS, but...

Google maps/navigation - awesome for finding anything, and avoiding traffic tie-ups with the live traffic overlay. Saves me several hours some weeks by checking the traffic bottlenecks on my way home and changing course.

Sports Tap - live score updates on just about everything that can be called a sport.

iHeartRadio - stream hundreds of radio stations live. Great for shows not syndicated in your area. (Very flaky over 3G though, excellent on wifi).

Pandora - create custom radio stations.

My Tracks - Integrates GPS and Google Maps so you can track where you have been. Great for walking the dogs and knowing how far/fast I walked.

Flashlight - turns on the camera flash LED. So simple, yet so handy.

Shop Savvy - scan a barcode in the store and it will tell you the prices at competitors nearby and online.

Kayak - all things travel booking related.

Google Sky Map - point your phone at the night sky and it identifies the stars/planets you are seeing. Fun to kill time on night flights.

Bubble - a bubble level - again, simple but comes in handy.

Yelp - restaurant (and other) reviews. Uses GPS to identify what is around you.

ConvertPad - converts just about any measurement to any other. 12 mm = 1.4173 barleycorns in case you are wondering.

You also have your facebook/twitter/linkedin and other social networking stuff if you are into that.

Oh, and Flash - so I can see any website, even if Steve Jobs thinks I shouldn't.

I have an iphone -

Apps I use -

Facebook - for obvious family/friend reasons
AroundMe- quite possibly one of the best GPS apps I've used
Netflix - being able to stream movies or TV shows at anytime? Fantastic!
RunKeeper - I'm a runner, keeps track and posts to the internet everything
RedLaser - for finding the best price on just about anything while at a store and then giving you the ability to haggle with the sales guy when you SHOW him how much you can pay for his product somewhere else - used this to buy a printer, computer and TV so far - saved a bundle!
Convert - a nice unit converter
Craigslist Pro
and drum roll please - RAG DOLL BLASTER and Labrynth! - c'mon don't tell me you don't play games on YOUR phone :)

Currently using an iPhone 3g with the following apps:

Google Maps: Far better than turn by turn GPS in dense urban areas.
Notes: Invaluable for reminding yourself of things and making quick in-the-plant notations.
Calculator: Why carry more than you have to with a seperate calculator?
Safari: On the fly information. 'Nuff said.
USA Today: Stay informed about the world even when you're in a black hole 12 hours a day.
WikiHow Survival guide: Useful app for all kinds of situations.
Pandora: Great tunes while you work.
iHandy Level: Not quite a Master Precision level, but good enough for most minor tasks when calibrated.
PreSize: A little digital caliper. Again, not real precise, but good enough to get thread pitch off a bolt.
TapDrillTool: Probably my favorite app. All tap and drill sizes from #0 to 2in in NC and NF for cutting AND form taps. Also gives through hole sizes, and shows percentage of thread grab.
Home Depot: Nice little app of their inventory and store locations.
Convert Units: Converts all forms of measurement into all manor of different units.
5-0 Radio Pro: Great back round noise. Listen to police scanners world wide...
CraigsPro: You'll wonder how you spent so long using the actual Craigslist website. Great when you're trying to track down tools and such for cheap.

I have an iPhone 4 and consider myself a heavy user of apps.

For social networking
LinkedIn
Facebook (family only stuff)
Foursquare (location based app - it's fun)
TwitBird Pro (you can follow me on Twitter @affygility)

For business
Salesforce CRM app -have to keep in touch with those valuable clients
i41CX+ calculator. It's the best, mimics the HP 41CX RPN calculator. For the nerd in the family
Evernote. Syncs lots of data between the desktop and the phone
Dictionary - can't spell it will find out how to
Analyticsapp.com Gives me real-time google analytics information from our website(s)
Dropbox - file sharing app between iPhone and desktop
NIOSH Pocket Guide for Chemical Hazards - need to know an occupational exposure limit...go here.

For music
iPod
Pandora
Shazam - always dead-on at recognizing the song.

For news
CNN
SlingPlayer - allows me to watch my home tv, no matter where I am. It rocks!

Sports
Ski Report - I live in Colorado, need to see if Breck has some fresh pow!
ESPN Sportscenter

Travel
Kayak
Yelp - need to know where the best places to eat?
The Weather Channel
Avis rent a car

I travel a lot, so many of the apps make it easier for me while being a road warrior. Everyone in the family has a smart phone, so it's easy to stay connected.

This is just the main ones, but doesn't include games, individual site apps, etc. Have fun!

Hey Marc - hope your experience goes smoother for your iphone than mine - just make sure you opt for the 4 and not a 3g or 3gs. I've had nothing but troubles with my 3g since Apple upgraded the OS for the iphone 4.

Not meaning to stray from the topic - but the long and short of it - Apple developed the new OS and it appears they didn't do enough testing of it on the 3g/3gs phones. I have (as well as hundreds of others - see the Apple forums) have been plagued with numerous system problems on my phone. I'm working on my 3rd replacement phone now.

None.

Here in VT about 80% of the state has zero bars. Not much point in paying for a data plan I can't use.

However we can get the data plan for a month at a shot if I know we'll be traveling. Then the apps of choice would be Google Maps, Gmail & Pandora. SkyMaps sounds like a "must try".

My work Blackberry Bold - The google suite is the only ap I've downloaded.

My personal iPhone 3G S - I've tried more aps than I can name but I use these the most (no explanation needed for some):
Facebook
Netflix
SprintGPS - a running workout tracker that uses the GPS
The Weather Channel
Pandora
Photobucket
Yelp - for checking out out the area when I travel for work.
Concur - my company's travel agent's ap
World Heritage - A listing of world heritage sites with satellite view and wikipedia link (my son loves this)
Yahoo Sportacular - sports scores, schedules and stuff

That's probabl my top 10 non-game aps.

It will be a 4 if I do get one. I'm still pounding myself with *why* when I only need a phone to make and receive calls, and I hate to take on another expense, but if I don't I won't be 'keeping up with the times' so to speak, and I really should be looking at what I can do to make Elsmar more 'phone friendly' (for which I need some type of smart phone).

I will say I'm getting an education about how many 'apps' there are out there that people use.
