Hi all,

From reading thread I guess there are a few fantasy fans out there.

Some of the Books that I've read are

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth series.

He's done about 6 or 7 books in this series so far and I have found all of them impossible to put down, and I can't wait for the next one to come out !

David Gemmel - Anything by him !

This guy is amazing he is one of the most prolific fantasy writers about and I've read most of the books he's written and have enjoyed them all. He's also the first fantasy writer I read and it got me hooked on the whole genre. Some of my favourites are Morningstar, Waylander and the first chronicles of Druss the Legend.

Tolkein

I think virtually anythng I could say about this guy has already been said by someone else. Like a few of the people here I can't help picking up the books and rereading every year or so

Terry Pratchett

I think I've read most of his books. This guy is a comic fantasy writer, but some of his observations on the way humans behave and act are just so insightful and you find yourself thinking..."I know someone like that !!"
Great writer

I try and read every day and find it really helps me relax and can just let my mind wander to somewhere else

No time for reading of books. last book I read was about 5 years ago and it was on web site development. Don't even remember the title. I have been known however to become engrossed in sci-fi movies and also history documentaries. Civil war stuff fascinates me. I can not reconcile the frontal assualt of foot troops into cannon fire.
Really like to perform research on geneology, but must of it is on microfilm.
Lately reading is from the IRS regarding 401K's and social security.

I am a compulsive reader....I will read ANYTHING, rather than not read.

My preferences are SF/Fantasy...I like the classics (Asimov, Heinlein, Tolkien, Norton) as well as the 'new generation' (Drake, Pratchett, Eddings, etc).

I also read action/adventure (Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, etc).

During long waits in airports, or on trains and subways, I have been reduced to reading Harlequin Romances and Danielle Steele.

I watch TV once in a while, listen to music, or work on the computer, and STILL have a book open next to me at the time (right now I have 'Teeth of the Tiger' on the go)

Heard a marvelous quote last night, attributed to Mark Twain:

"The man who does not read is as ignorant as the man who cannot read."

OK, but can we get into the 21st century! Besides Mark Twain was hardley and original thinker. If I recall from my college literature classes he plagiarized most of his work! Sure wish my memory was better so I could put a fix on it.

A short time ago an old navy buddy was talking about all the books he was reading (three at one time) when we challenged him on it he produced an electronic gizmo that all three books were downloaded on to.

Any covers use a similar device? :read:

re: Civil War - tactics

Jim, the frontal line tactics were a carryover from 18th century linear warfare, developed when the main weapon was a smoothbore flintlock musket - dangerous out to about 50 to 100 yards and smoothbore cannon. (Just got back to work after a weekend of 18th century tactics demonstration/living history at Ft. Ligonier in Ligonier, PA. Time period is French & Indian War (Claes - that's the Seven Years War). The American Civil War is a great case of the military using the last war's tactics to fight a new war. One reason the casualties were relatively high. Technology had made major advances in weapons, but tactics hadn't caught up.

My reading list greatly expanded over the weekend - lots of good books on the early Western Pennsylvania frontier and the conflict. I don't have authors or titles here. I'm trying to find time to do work reading as well - Juran and Deming. I am reading some journals on blacksmithing fairly regularly - just another extension of my general interst in history. Also debating whether to buy "The Knight & The Blast Furnace" - a metallurgical investigation into the production of armor - pricey, but highly recommended by a friend.

In the past, reading has included books such as Zen & the Art of Archery and Musashi's Five Rings.

"The Memory of Running" by Ron McLarty...an immensely satisfying kind of redemption, closure, human spirit, love conquers all, book.

Also, "Plainsong" and "Eventide" by Kent Haruf.
