Claus, From your perspective in Europe, is what Americans are reading similar to what Europeans are reading? Just curious. I know I read a fair amount of British lit, but other than "Smilla's Sense of Snow" I don't know that I've read a lot of Scandanavian lit.

I read Cussler's Fire Ice during the beginning of December. If you read the book you will see why it made one of last year's disasters even more chilling.

Right now I am reading Eats Shoots & Leaves a few pages at a time. So, far so good (ha).

I just finished reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." It's not a novel, but it's an interesting read.
From what I hear from other sources, a lot of this book IS fictional, just like a novel, in terms of the real interactions the author had versus the ones he "recreates" in the book and his lectures.

A casual acquaintance I once met, Robert Ringer, (Looking Out for #1
by ROBERT J. RINGER ) was also great at "recreating real events" to be more readable, humorous, and to fit with the point he was trying to make.

The "novelization" of the message doesn't impair the message, but readers should not accept them blindly as "documentation." They are more like "anecdotal evidence."

Well... Judging from the suggestions I see in this thread, I would say that differeces are neglectable.

Imo, there is a lot of good literature from these parts, but I don't think all that much of it ever gets translated. That leads us to another problem: Lots of US and brit literature is being translated to swedish and the other scandinavian languages, but translations are not always a good thing since many a tale seems to lose something vital in the translation. That is hardly surprising when you consider the fact that the english language contains more than twice the number of words found in swedish. All things considered, I try to read as much as possible in the original lingo.

I'm finishing "the rule of four" by Ian Caldwell & Dustin Thomason.......a great thriller. Similar to the Da Vinci Code.

It's not fiction, but my latest venture is trying to find time to read Volume 2 of Steelmaking before Bessemer, Crucible Steel - the growth of technology by K. C. Barraclough published by The Metals Society of Great Britain. Combines 2 interests - professional (I'm a metallurgist by training) and history/archaeology. Interesting work, on the development of steel primarily in the Sheffield area with some references to Sweden.

Last November I read some reviews about the forthcoming publication of a particular book and resolved therefore to obtain it upon release, which I succeeded in so doing in January 2005. I am not disappointed. Jared Diamond's "Collapse" is an example of a well-written book carefully researched and of a sobering, didactic nature. (pun both intended and unintended!)

Sadly, I expect few business leaders or politicians will read it let alone heed its message or act upon it. And, though Mr Diamond tries to show some cause for hope, that we might learn from the mistakes of lost societies, one is left wondering if mankind will actually abandon the folly of its destructive proclivities to take a different course in living on this rather small planet.

Maybe those in "quality" who are also involved intheir companies EMS will take the time and trouble to read "Collapse".

My husband is reading it, I'll have to nab it when he's done.
