To stray off topic again--this is funny, and so true!

People here in Maine sometimes remark that they can't figure out where I'm from. I am from Arizona, but spent a good deal of time in California; the dialect is not different between these two.

Once I explain myself I sometimes assert that I am actively resisting adopting the dialect; when I get used to the area enough to say "Ah'm gonna go pahk the cah in the doohyahd," it's time to go back.

This piece of bluntly delivered (not all that many Mainers actually talk that way anymore) news is not always received with humor, but that's okay.

Also funny

:topic: More on dialects, not reading:

There was a very funny television commercial last year but not sure if it aired nationally or not. Dunkin Donuts featured baseball pitcher Curt Schilling, who had switched from the Arizona Diamondbacks team to the Boston Red Sox, and he was listening to an audiotape and practicing out loud saying the words as if he had a Boston (BAH-stahn?) accent. He is sitting there saying "Wicked haaaaaahd. Pahhhhk the caaaaah. Wicked haaaahd." and it was hysterical.

Back on topic - I'm reading "Faithful" by Stephen King and Stewart O'Nan about their experiences with the 2004 Boston Red Sox Season. Very interesting since I live with a diehard BoSox fan and have realized through reading this book that he could be much, much worse than he is.

Still a little off topic - Jennifer, I seem to remember Maniacs being used rather than Mainers, when I lived in NH. Can't say that it refered to driving, as the road maniacs were from Massachusetts. Still for me the Maine/New England accent was far more appealing than the Souths. I spent a year in South Carolina, and was just starting to pick up some of the local accent, though hadn't progessed to y'all.

I'm from western PA, north of Pittsburgh and we have our own idiosynchracies, a tendacy to add an r to wash or Washington, and we definitely did not accept Shakespeare's question in Hamlet of "to be or not to be" - a fairly typical statement is "The bedroom needs cleaned." Also, the use of redd (spelling ?) to indicate a need to place a room/or something else in order/cleanliness. For example, "redd up the house before company comes". Another Pittsburgh term is you'ns filling a similar place as the South's y'all.

As for reading, I think most of my upcoming "spare" time is going to be spent reviewing ISO 14001:2004 and prepping for the CQE in June.

I have read ISO 14001:1996 and the 2004 sequel dozens of times and I frankly think it is a boring read. I am currently enjoying "The long Arm of Lee".

I am reading "Unconditional Life" from Deepaak Chopra. A very inspirational book. It gives some answers on important aspects of life but poses many more. I am enjoying reading it.

books, Books, BOOKS

I can not read enough!

Currently, I am reading:

"Tzaddik - A Portrait of Rabbi Nachman", "Tractate Berakoth" and "A Place to Remember"

My favorite authors are:

Myself: Each time I read my last book I am amazed that I could string that many coherent thoughts together. My sister (Who will be 50 in August, and I love to kid her about it), when asked about the book, said: "I didn't know he could read, much less write!"

Douglas Adams: His Hitchhiker's Guide series is still my favorite. I am looking forward to the movie.

Richard Brautigan (I think that is spelled right): "Trout Fishing in America", "A Confederate General from Big Sur", "Revenge of the Lawn", and "The Hawkline Monster" top the list.

Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman: I could not put down "Good Omens"

I just finished the latest Harry Potter. They just keep getting better and better.
I was a little disappointed in the last book. It just seemed to be put together a little hastily and didn't have that "flow" from the previous books.

I'm finishing up "Eyes of the Heart" by one of my favorites, Frederick Buechner, and just recently finished "The Question of God: Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis Debate God, Love, Sex & the Meaning of Life." That was a good read.

Funny - that's pretty much what my sister thinks. I thought it was great.
