I am a third of the way thru A&D and will read the other two Dan Brown books after this.
You and my Mom can have a race to see who finishes A&D first...she likes it, but boy oh boy is she a slow reader!

I am waiting for the LOTR Definitive Directors cut, Three Box set DVDs before I sit down for the ultimate movie marathon on my new Wide Screen TV.
I'm waiting for either the Coles Notes version (summaries of books used by students who don't want to actually read assigned literature) or the made-for-tv miniseries. :D

It's so hard to pick out a few from the many authors I love...

Has anyone read the Eliot Pattison series "The Skull Mantra" "Water Touching Stone", "Bone Mountain" or "Beautiful Ghosts"? These are wonderful mysteries set in Tibet, with the protagonist an exiled Chinese investigator.

Or how about the Alexander McCall Smith series starting with "The # 1 Ladies Detective Agency"?

Any of the lady detective books: Linda Barnes, Janet Evanovich (I so love Grandma!) Kathy Reichs, Edna Buchanan, Carol O'Conner, JA Jance

The Sci-Fi we covered elsewhere...

Yup, real all the Dan Browns, too.

"The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. That was one of the most satisfying books I've read in a long time.

Harry Potter, especially book 4, has been grand. I was a bit disappointed in book 5.

Roxane, I also love Lucy Maud Montgomery. I re-read the Anne of Green Gables series beginning to end a few years back. There are many, many wonderful kids books...

For you history buffs, how about "No Ordinary Time" by Doris Kearns Goodwin
or "Pope Joan" by Donna Cross.

Life is not worth living without a pile of books waiting to be read!

My first post - and it's nothing to do with ISO

I only found this site this week, and it has been very revealing. Rather than jump straight in with questions about the QMS, I thought i would have a look around and see what has already been said. I had to have my say on this thread though as it is (or was ) one of my favourite hobbies.

When I was younger I was an avid reader, and spent most of my spare time reading anything at all. Newspapers, magazines, the back of the cereal box.

The first books I remember reading were Enid Blyton books, and as our local library seemed to have everyone, I made my way through their collection, sometimes reading two books in a day, especially during the summer holidays.

As I got older I started reading Jeffrey Archer books, and still do to this day, even if they are all essentially the same book. At eight though, it was all very exciting stuff for me.

I then went through a phase of reading Stephen King's books, so will be taking a look at the HP Lovecraft books that were recommended earlier in this post.

Nowadays, I don't seem to read as many books, as I get bored with them very quickly. I persevered with soem Charles Dickens books, and once I got used to the language, they were pretty good.

Right now, I am rerading two books, again down to my inability to stay interested in a book for any length of time - A Tale Of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, and 120 Days of Sodom, by Marquis de Sade. Slightly different ends of the spectrum, but the first one was a freebie and the second one, I found in my loft, sod ecided to give it a go.

and now for something completely different

Moving away from the sci-fi for a second, does anyone else read the Larry McMurtry westerns that my husband enjoys like Lonesome Dove, etc? Husband also enjoys the Jane Auel series with Clan of the Cave Bear and the other books that I've forgotten the name of.

My Mother-In-Law is so proud that I've gotten her son to enjoy reading something besides Sports Illustrated - score one for me! Double bonus points when his little brother asked to borrow some of the Zane Grey westerns!!!

My reading habits

As a father of one and step father of 2 I read alot of Dr. Suess :biglaugh:

For myself I like short stories I do not really have a fav but I do enjoy sci-fi fantasy ie: asimov (sp) etc etc....... I have discoverd some very good out of print reads at a local used book store (hole in the wall) I just finished a book on the early growth of the michigan auto industry it started around 1894 and ended around the late 60's.

for all of you lunies :bonk: try "The Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy" supper funny british book that was made into a mini-series by the bbc

my #1 fav is "how to sell yourself to others" auth. Elmar Wheeler......note also out of print.

This has been a great help in getting the horse thirsty and selling employees and management on the quality (business) system.

Great List!

I have read most of what's been posted here so I won't repeat (Stephen King). I taught both of my children to read while they were in pre-school (training). Now they devour books (awareness). They're now 9 and 12 and both of them have read the entire Harry Potter series on their own, as soon as they were published (competence).

I read the Hobbit and then LOTR to them OUT LOUD (management committment). It took 4 years because I had to pry their own books out of their hands. I wouldn't take them to see the movies until we finished each book (employee motivation).

Right now I'm reading some of the [English] classics like Grapes of Wrath, Uncle Tom's Cabin, anything by Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). Great website for free etexts: Project Gutenburg.
I've pulled a lot of oldies but goodies from there (supplier evaluation). Stuff I should have read in high school and college, but didn't (corrective action).

I read the Bible, too (control of records). Which will not preclude me from reading Dan Brown's books, now that I have heard your comments. Currently reading: Slander, by Ann Coulter and Xenocide, by Orson Scott Card (Ender Saga).

Yes, the entire hitchhiker series is top notch imo. :agree1: Actually, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy started out as a BBC radio series before it hit the book store shelves.
