What do you use to Calibrate 40" Calipers

Our company is going for ISO 13485 with an audit in March. One of the comments during Phase I was regarding the fact that some of our calibrations are not the complete range of the device, specifically our 40" calipers.

My question is, how or what do you use to calibrate digital calipers at 40"?
We use gage blocks up to 6" and have 12" and 24" standards for larger calipers.
I can't seem to find a standard to use for that length.

Re: Calibrating 40" Calipers

The common practice is wringing blocks together by competent dimensional metrologist to obtain the 40 inches. Sounds like you have enough blocks to make 40 inches. Beware that the longer the block, the greater the temperature coefficient errors. So if you are not in a 68 degree room, the block errors will be bigger. But bottom line, if you have blocks totalling a combined 40 inches, you should, with proper technique, be able to calibrate 40 inch calipers, I believe.

I don't have the blocks to do that. The blocks are a .05-4" set. The 12" and 24" standards are micrometer standards purchased individually.

The blocks are only .05-4". We use individual 12" and 24" micrometer standards for our 12 and 24" calipers. I wouldn't have enough blocks to make up 40".

You should have the thing calibrated by an outside lab, or buy the standards necessary to do it in-house.

I would like to keep this in house; however, I cannot find the correct length standard. I've seen 24" and 48".

Anyone run into or know where I can purchase larger size calibration rods?

What is the range of measurements you'll do with the caliper, and what and what kind of tolerances are you working with? Presumably your measurements will be >24" and ≤ 40".

We deal with all the sizes in between. Occasionally even over 40" and we have to use a steel rule. Tolerances are typically .010" or larger

Once you have the cost of the rods I would then check this against the cost of sending the unit(s?) out. DO not forget your time and the cost of keeping the rods calibrated.
Here is a link to some sources for gauge rods of the length you are looking for.

Agreed. The cost of the rods and the investment in time is much higher than what an outside lab would charge. If one was measuring throughout the range, as indicated by the OP, one would want to at least measure every half a foot, so we're looking at 6 or 7 rods. Not cheap.
