Re: What is Gauge Capability? Dial Thickness Gauges and Digital Vernier Calipers

I ran the number and graphs. It looks like your major issue is inadequate gage resolution for the part variation. This will have to be corrected before you can interpret any of the other criteria. Can you repeat the study with a gage resolution of 0.0005 or 0.0001?

There also appears to be differences in the average between operators, but this cannot be definitively stated because of the resolution issue. I suspect that once you resolve the resolution issue that it may be the next issue to address. Repeatability may or may not be improved by the improvement in resolution, so you may also have a problem there.

What are you measuring? Could form variation in the product cause repeatability problems for you?

Miner, This is an I.D. measurement. I received your analysis and reviewed it with our gage calibration technician. She is going to use another 3 point micrometer with 4 place resolution, then rerun the data again.
Thanks a lot for the analysis and advice, it is sure appreciated.
Will let you know how the next study comes out.:thanx:

Re: What is Gauge Capability? Dial Thickness Gauges and Digital Vernier Calipers

You may see form variation in an ID measurement that could influence the results on a three-point mic. These are taper, barrel-shape or hourglass. This can show up in both Repeatability and Reproducibility. Random variation in the depth of measurement will show up in Repeatability, while within-operator control of depth, and between operator differences in that depth will show up in Reproducibility.

Odd-numbered lobing could also impact a three-point mic.

Miner that is a good point about where the measurement is taken within the I.D. I have documented your comments printed them and discussed with the gage control technician so we can improve our understanding and hopefully the results too.:agree1:

Re: What is Gauge Capability? Dial Thickness Gauges and Digital Vernier Calipers

Ralph, sorry for not being able to respond earlier. Already some good advice here. I believe there may be an issue with part selection as well. Very high GRR%SV and very low GRR%Tol. The overall range of parts selected for the study is a small fraction of the total tolerance. If you do SPC on this, you will need to consider GRR% of Process variation- and of course purpose for which you are using this gage. You will at least need to ensure that parts cover the SPC process variation. Is that the case here? If the part selection is wrong, IMHO, adding another decimal place to the readings may not help much.

Attached is my analysis of this data. You might want to look at the charts (vis-a-vis what Miner has said above). I have taken the tolerance of 0.4 from the data you had emailed me.

Atul,
Thanks very much for your help and taking the time to review and suggest improvements. We will be evaluating our process and equipment to resolve the issues.

Thanks Miner, can you tell me what do the rest of these numbers tell me:
How do I interpret as OK, or NG and how much. 3 appraisers, 3 trials, 10 parts.
