I'm new to the AS9100 standard (but familiar with the ISO 9001 standard).

What is meant by "Configuration Management"?

What exactly should we be managing the configuration of?

Thanks in advance for all the helpful answers!

Re: "Configuration Management"?

There is a wealth of information here regarding configuration management processes and practices. Explore the search function using "configuration management" or "ISO 10007" and you will find many previous threads.

"Configuration Management" is a particularly unfathomable term. The person that thought of using it in the AS standard should have been drawn and quartered. Surely they could have found an easier more understandable term.

In clearer terms it is "revision level control". It entails what you need to do to ensure that what you build is what your customer wants, that is that the agreed configuration (revision level) matches the actual configuration (revision level).

Re: "Configuration Management"?

Do you have your own designs or product?
We generally manufacture customer designs, or we collaborate with a customer to create a new design. Sometimes the customer owns the design, provides the prints. Sometimes we create our own designs and prints.

Thank you, Jim.

So, is it accurate to say that "configuration" is nearly synonymous with "revision"?

So this is very similar to document control?

Configuration management means a lot more if you make your own product and/or control the design.

For Example:

Let's say you manufacture automobiles. You make a 2011 Bambino Spin 5000. Everything is going fine. Sometime in the middle of the model year you decide to change the alternator for whatever reason. Some of your 2011 Bambino Spins have the type A alternator and some have the type B alternator and they are not interchangeable.

Five years from now someone needs a new alternator for their 2011 Bambino Spin. They go to the parts store and the clerk asks them for the VIN number. He needs the VIN number because all of the 2011 Bambino Spins with a VIN number greater than 'x' were equipped with a different alternator.

This is a very simplistic example of what configuration management is trying to control. Multiply this by a couple of zillion other changes up and down the supply chain and you get an idea of the importance of configuration management.

Good luck
