What is more impressive: Six Sigma Certification or being bilingual

1) Bring my Spanish up to literate level - spoken and written
2) Get 6s black belt "certification" from a MBB friend who wants me to be his guinea pig for his new coursework package.
I'm not sure the goals are comparable.

BB is something you can do while working on your regular job over maybe 6 months to a year. Learning a new language to a spoken and written "literate" level requires full immersion for 3 to 4 months, and then continuing practice somewhat regularly. If you don't do the immersion part, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Won't help ya much with a morena in Mazatlan, but as a return on investment of your time, the BB is prolly much better.

I agree with Wes Bucey. If you are not in the process of looking for or taking a job that requires proficiency in either Six Sigma or Spanish then they are both long term goals. You could make your decision on which is easiest to obtain and do that first and save the other for later. Since you are already proficient in quality, the Six Sigma gives you a certificate more than new knowledge. I have always understood that if you learn a new language you can only be successful if you are able to use it on a regular basis. You may want to consider both of these issues.

Here's what's going through my mind right now...

I do a lot of training of hourly people. Where I have worked a large percentage of the hourly workers are native Spanish speakers and there's always a handful that have very little English. Being a better speaker and writer of Spanish would make that job a lot easier for both myself and my audience. That's a big plus, leadership-wise as far as I'm concerned.

6s, as I see it, is resume filler. I know all the techniques, I've read the books, I've been a project manager since 1990 but just haven't done a project or two under the supervision of an MBB.
It might look impressive to a recruiter or HR person, but I would hope a hiring manager could see past the (lack of) certification to the actual accomplishments. Problem there is the recruiters and HR people are the gatekeepers.

If I misled ANYONE in another thread that a SSBB required an MBB to sign off on a project, I deeply apologize. According to ASQ and most other SS certificate granters who require a six S project, almost anyone (especially a boss) can attest to a completed SS project, even if that persn has absolutely zero six knowledge.

SS = six sigma
BB = black belt
MBB = Master Black Belt (ASQ does not recognize this as a valid designation:confused:)

And I hope the ASQ has success in standardizing 6s and perhaps getting rid of BBS (Belt Bull S^&%) altogether.

but the reality is there are a lot of Master Black Belts with various large corporations and consulting firms training black belts and green belts and white belts and champions and stakeholders and I would think that most recruiters and some HR people would ask what MBB trained you.

I know Bank of America and Delta Airlines recognize MBB's. For all the good it has done them.

Scott,
I was in your position about 8 years ago. I knew all of the techniques and was mentoring certified BBs in the use of tools such as DOE. Despite this no recruiter or HR person looking for Six Sigma skills would touch me without the certification. So, the first opportunity that I got, I got certified first as a BB then as an MBB. While I did not learn anything new getting the BB certification, I did learn a lot getting the MBB certification. It was in depth (7 weeks) and highly worthwhile.

It is your choice to stand on principles and fight a losing battle, or do what it takes to succeed in today's market.
