What is Resolution Analysis?

Hi everyone....
I was reviewing our audit report again to prepare for a internal audit and came across this. Can anyone explain to me what a Resolution Analysis is?

During my last AS9100 audit the auditor noted in the Objective Evidence box that we "use resolution analysis".

This is related to 7.6 Does the organization determine the monitoring and measurement to be undertaken and the monitoring devices needed to provide evidence of conformity of product to determined requirements?

In the Guidance Notes it lists 3 examples (Interval Analysis, Resolution Analysis and Gage Repeatable & Reproducibilty)

Appreciate any help...thanks

I have seen it explained this way:

Resolution
The resolution of a test is the finest gradation on the measurement scale. A measurement system with insufficient resolution may hide variations that exist and invalidate analysis results. It is generally recommended that resolution is at least 1/10 of the lesser of specification tolerance and process variation.

As it has already been stated, the resolution of a measurement device is roughly defined the smallest increment that the device is capable of distinguishing. But that is a statement, not an analysis.

The auditor may be referring to an analysis of the actual discrimination, or ability to distinguish differences, of the measurement system (number of distinct categories in Minitab). It is one output of a gage R&R study.

Hope this helps.
