What is the average time needed for process documentation?

Hello,

I want to know the average time needed to write process manuals (which contains the policy, process maps, procedures, and all the step by step work instructions)?

Example, I'm going to write the Leasing Department Manual which contains the main policies which they should follow, the process maps for all their works, the procedures on how to get the policies done and all the step by step works they are doing. To do this, I'll have to shadow with the SMEs of this department and record everything then look for the best practices and control points, this ofc is going to be reviewed by different managers and they will request edits... Etc.

Any similar experience?

I don't think any of us would have a better guesstimate than you. It's like me asking you how long it will take for me to drive home tonight.

from your description it looks like you are going to make process improvement recommendations along the way...
My advice is document the process as it is today (current state), publish that, then work on incremental improvements.
If you're trying to do improvements before the process is documented it will be a never ending project and you'll never publish.
Documenting current state give you a baseline to measure progress.

I knoe but, I wanted to know if I'm being slow/fast... Etc. Wanted to check with someone who's been there and done that.

Thanks for your comment anyway.

I have been there and done that.
A number of times.
It's been from a couple of weeks to a couple of months depending on the level of authority I had, how cooperative the stakeholders were, and what other projects I was juggling.

Recent memory - I completely re-did a customer complaint/return process in a fairly small company that averaged about 5 complaints a week. With relatively cooperative colleagues it took about 3 months from initial Kaizen process mapping to finished and improved process.

Whatever the answer is for your situation, you and everybody else will be dismayed to learn that it takes a lot longer than you hoped it would.

even more if you have «obstacles» like a «not so involved» top management, really busy coworkers, complicated processes to explain (with a lot of technicalities for exemple)...
