Your signature indicates you are in the ISO Quality Department of your company. We need some answers to help you in the most efficient manner possible.

From your other posts, we know
  1. your company is a call center in India with an American market;
  2. that your company is trying to seek ISO registration; and
  3. that you have the responsibility for coordinating the effort, but have absolutely no experience in the task.
  • Do you have access to a copy of the ISO Standard?
  • Does the company have any Quality Manual?
The most frustrating part of trying to help you is that you apparently have no frame of reference on which to build. Have you purchased (or borrowed to read) any books on the topic of Quality? If so, which ones?

If you haven't read any books, some of our Cove members may suggest some VERY BASIC books to begin your education.

In my opinion, it is almost impossible for someone with no background in any Quality methods or philosophies to assemble a Quality Management System sufficient to get ISO registration without outside hands-on help. This is far more intensive and effective help than you can get from writing to a group of experts like the Cove and asking scattered questions.

You need a basic framework on which to build. You can get some of that from beginning level books on Quality. From that starting point, you might be able to talk to your American customers who are outsourcing work to your company for copies of their Quality manuals as templates for you to build a Quality System capable of meeting their requirements.

Any Covers out there with suggestions for BASIC BOOKS on Quality?

Yugender,

Please read Wes Bucey's response to your request very, very carefully! He makes a very valid point about the need to have some basic knowledge in order to successfully meet the requirements of your job. With some of your other posts, I have suggested taking a course on understanding the fundamentals of ISO 9001, sponsored by your organization.

Think of it like this. If your boss told you to build a house, could you do so without knowing the building codes of the region, basic architectural design skills, electrical and plumbing knowledge, etc.

As much as we are willing - and enjoy - helping people solve their Management System issues, it is very difficult to do so if the person asking the question does not understand the basic fundamentals of the subject.

That being said...

The difference between a Quality System and a Quality Procedure is very simple.

Quality System - Tools, methods, documentation, and processes that have been implemented and maintained to ensure your organization is able to consistently meet the needs of your Customer. When you meet all of the requirements of ISO 9001:2000, you have met the requirements for a Quality Management System.

Quality Procedure - A document outlining the who/what/why/when/where/how aspects of a process/task/activity. Within the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System, there are 6 requirements for Procedures (Internal Auditing, Corrective Action, Preventive Action, Document Control, Record Control, and Control of Nonconforming Product). Of course, ISO 9001:2000 also says that you should have a procedure (or document) where its absence could have a negative impact on your organization's ability to meet the needs of your Customer.

I don't have any books outside of the course manuals I have obtained from my off-site training programmes I have participated in. However, online there is:

For $30(US) there's http://www.excel-elearning.com/dispatch.jsp?coursenumber=420300

...just a sample of what can be found online...

Quality and Quality Procedures

Dear Yugender:

I have to support the points made by Wes. I have seen too many such questions posted, in other forums as well. It saddens me, especially if it is true that you really have no clue. With sincere best wishes and great luck.

Dear Yugender,

I realise in India there is the possibility that buying books may be a somewhat expense proposition, given the levels of wages and salaries, as compared with those in the USA, UK or Europe.

You may try searching the Internet and find a list of books. From that point, select one or two and see if your local library could obtain them. Perhaps your local library is able to use the "inter-library loan" system - it is worth inquiring.

When I started out years ago, I could not afford too many books. I did obtain from a friend's university library Juran's Quality Control Handbook. This venerable tome is now in its 5th edition. (The one I first used was the 2nd edition.)

So, if you do not have a local town library, perhaps there is a college or university library nearby at which (though you may not be able to borrow the book of your choice) you may be able to read it as I did - in the library of the University of Salford those years ago. (Later on, I bought my own copy.)

But, I would also suggest you might try to persuade your firm to buy a couple of books and build up its internal library. That is cheaper than sending you on a training course.

I recall well what is was like to try and get information and to afford books. You have my sincerest understanding.

And, if you are "totally confused", take heart, the quality movement continues after many years to constantly debate the meaning of this and that, when it comes to ISO 9000 etc. We all began somewhere and I will bet most of those in the "Cove" would admit to having been confused about something or other over the years.

Persevere and you will prosper.

Even though I qualify on all counts, what I got was a phone call from a salesman, heaps of advertising attachments, and a link back to the same registration page, although I specifically asked the phone caller to send me a link to download the book. Company may need some severe Customer Relationship Management (CRM) re-engineering. I will continue to follow up and report, especially on whether I ever get the ebook.
