In the poultry industry we outsource the process of determining the day old chicks sex. We not ony dictate the product we want but the process by which it is performed. They perform an outsourced process and in turn are suppliers. On the other hand Grainger is a supplier but do not perform outsourced processes as we do not determine their processes. Simplified companies providing an outsourced process are suppliers but not all suppliers perform an outsourced process.

When a process is outsourced, the company/entity it's outsourced to is a supplier.
Thanks,Jim. But I'm still not clear about the difference between outsourced process and supplier. you mentioned that When a process is outsourced, the company/entity it's outsourced to is a supplier, does it mean that a supplier is not necessarily a outsourced process? if yes, how to distinguish the two?

Thanks for you patience.

Generally, "outsourcing" refers to the act of subcontracting some or all of a manufacturing job to an external source. When that's done, the subcontracted organization is a supplier.

Other types of suppliers that don't involve outsourcing might be companies that provide raw materials, services or tools/equipment relevant to the job in question.

In our case we have an outsourced process i.e. anodising a component for a medical device. The outsourced processor (conducting the anodising) is a supplier, just as if they had supplied an actual part themselves. They have to supply to us with a supplier questionnaire, they are vendor rated, the effect of the process goes through QC etc etc.:2cents:

an outsourced process is any process conducted by an entity outside of your organization, i.e painting, plating, sterilization, etc etc
A supplier is any entity that provides a service or product outside of your organization, this could also be an outsourced process.

** yes iso 9000 says a supplier can be external or internal but i'm trying to make thing simple:notme:

Clear your mind from looking for the difference.
Now, any entity who supplies goods or services to you is your supplier.
If this goods or service are to be processed in a specific manner which ...
1. You provide all the required details to the supplier
or
2. He provides to you, and you test / validate and accept it and want the supplier to always maintain that set process
then you are outsourcing that process to that supplier.
