What is the real purpose of a Certificate of Conformance "C of C"?

I agree. I believe generic certificates of conformance are useless for that reason. My response was to your statement: "Even if notarized, all the notary does is verify the person signing is in fact that person." Notarization often carries an oath along with it.

More than likely your regulatory department might find C of C helpful when registering products abroad. Latin American countries are notorious for requesting C of C for medical device registration.

would I be incorrect in saying on our COC that our product is manufactured in conformance to ISO? If so, what other verbiage would be correct on a COC?

See ISO 9001: What Does it Mean in the Supply Chain (PDF) especially page 10.

You need to be careful to not suggest that you have ISO-certified products. You have an ISO-certified QMS. It's OK to say that in a C of C, but your products don't conform because of ISO 9001. They conform because you've satisfied the product requirements.

We do things a bit different...For us a COC is an additional document (to a PSW) that we use to inform our SUPPLIER that we are accepting their PPAP. I know..I know..that is the purpose of the PSW.

The problem is there is only one signatory on the PSW...our COC is signed by the managers of Spec Control, Quality, Cost Planning, & R&D (both US and Japanese must sign).

Everyone wants a chance to review and sign-off on the PPAP....

I believe the C of C represents the beginnings of traceability. We purchase all our medical device components from China so having that designated spot for lot number control is key when product investigation has to happen. It ties in the lot number/quantity/Po number and part number.
