As the thread title asks.

I've used visuals that allow auditors to see the big picture, I've found this method of teaching to be effective.

I too use visuals. For the serious discussion, I use the 15,000' process maps of our system. However, prior to the serious stuff to get them out of their boxes, I ask them to "own" a restaurant and make me a cup of coffee using inputs, activities and outputs; or a movie theatre where I want a box of popcorn. The surprise is just how many bad cups of coffee and funky boxes of popcorn I get. In the end, to complete the PCDA loop, I am always an irate customer which makes a great stress reliever (at which point I usually lose control of the class).

We tend to begin with the big picture, so they understand a process, then we focus in on one process, and analyze that. We stress inputs, outputs, controls, metrics, documentation, etc. From there, we have them build a checklist (yes, a checklist) from the process.

I'm fixin' to do this in about an hour. I'm working with a bunch of internal auditors that work for a government agency that management the watershed of its county....lots of unique things are done here...multiple complex issues, customers, suppliers, etc...

I'm going to flow the audit process through their operations flow charts from the voting process on required work..through the regulatory issues...to the final work completion.

This one is gonna be fun.

I start off with pictures and explanations of process, input, output, activity, etc. Using pictures, I show how items link up. Theory is all fine and good, but I want to know if the Auditors understand.

This leads us to Exercise #1. Since we're all doing Internal Auditor Training, that is the process focused on where the student are to identify the inputs, outputs, environment, etc.

Exercise #2 is a repeat of Exercise #1, but in Teams, they select their own process and determine the inputs, outputs, etc.

During the Mock Audit exercise, they follow the IA process and learn to how to use the checklists to verify/validate the existing process being audited.
