Hi All,

Just interested to know what Computer system people are running at home. My 'Home built' system comprises the following:

Motherboard: ASUS A7V600-X, 8 x AGP
CPU:AMD Athalon XP2600+
RAM: 512 MB DDR PC 3200
HD: 40GB Western Digital
Monitor: 17" LG LCD Flat Screen
DVD Player: LG 16X
CD/Burner: Lite-on 52X
Video: NVIDIA XFX GEForce FX5700 128MB AGP
Sound: Can't Remember

I have a 128 MB USB Memory stick to carry my work around and this is the best 'Tool' I have bought as I can now take Large slide presentatioons etc to other sites and change them as necessary. It sure beats a CD or Disk. I have recently binned (thrown out) my Scanner and Printer for an all in one unit. A Lexmark XP something and it has Scanner, Printer, Copier and fax capabilities. It prints fantastic photos. My Digital camera is a few years old a CX4000 series 2MP Kodak. The week after I bought it Kodak bought out the much better 6000 series which are now half of the price and up to triple the Pixel rate. :(

I think this is correct as I am sending this from work. A group of us, at work, have found it is a whole lot cheaper if we build our PCs from scratch so we buy the indivdual parts and one of the IT guys builds them up for a Carton/Slab of beer (Australian Carton is 24 cans). We also do rebuilds (as I have recently done) which are also cheaper than buying a full system. I have just upgraded my Motherboard, CPU, RAM and Video Card a few weeks ago.
As you can see I am a bit of a techno nerd when it comes to PCs etc but PCs have been in my family since Dad bought an old Amstrad with a cassette tape storage before moving on to the classic Commodore 64 and Amiga I will be interested in seeing what you have or some old PC stories.

The last Australian beer I recall (in a haze, I admit) seemed to be a giant can between two and four liters in volume (Foster's???) Are we talking a carton of 24 of those?

Wes,

No I'm afraid we have returned to the standard 375 ml (12 oz) the average alcohol content is about 3.5% with a lot of drinkers going for 'light beer' about 2.4 %

Before DOS.

I build my own as well.

I started working on computers in 1974, before the evil one Bill Gates. :tg:

I started on a DEC PDP11/45 with a memory expansion of 12K of iron core memory. No I'm not making this up. I was a Training devicesman for the US Navy in pensacola florida. We were responsible for the flight simulators which the pilots trained on.

After awhile we moved up to a mini-computer which one of us developed some assembler language for.

30 years later and I have to have my son program my video recorder because the [email protected]##$ instructions are too hard to figure out!

Castlemain xxxx, I miss that good Ausie beer.
Greg,
You and I have almost the same home system.
I just recently changed my piece of crap Intel mother board to an AMD Athlon XP and, it's way faster.
I agree, build your own, it's way cheaper.
Wallace.

First computer in about 1990 was a used IBM 66 MHz for ~ $150

Next was a Compaq P-166 with 6 GB HD in about 1996 -- woo woo, it was hot! $1600

Next, and now, Athlon 1.2 GHz w/ 80 GB HD, with CD-writer and DVD player for $1600, then added a DVD +/- R/RW. Have not built my own.

I do agree -- the 128 MB memory sticks are cool -- so long as everyone's computer has a USB port.

speaking of...

:topic: Speaking of beer, did anyone happen to watch that Pat Tillman Memorial Service that was televised last night?

The people kept coming up to the podium with steins of Guinness and drinking them since it was his favorite beer - they had to edit for foul language but they couldn't block out the beer drinking!

Wow! Where did you find a used 66 MHz PC in 1990? 16 MHz was great back then. I bought my first PC in about 1991. It was a screaming 20 MHz 286 with an 88 MB hard drive for around $2000. It ran rings around the 16 MHz computers at work. Every computer I've owned since then I have built myself. I even had a side business for a while building and upgrading PCs. Actually I still do it on occasion for friends - it helps with the taxes.

I learned to program in the '80s using punch cards. :mg: The first computer I used on a regular basis was the Commodore VIC-20, followed by the Atari 400 and 800.

First computer I actually programmed/played with was my uncle's VIC-20, followed by the Commodore 64. I remember back then you could take the tape "saved" files and listen to them on your radio...lots of funny beeps and screeches... :biglaugh:

Then came the Apple IIe, with :mg: a floppy disk drive and this thing they called a "mouse".

Through the course of high school I messed around with friends Tandy 1000s (right number??) and Apples. With monitors that showed color!!!

Then I decided this whole Pentium thing was a great idea...so I bought my first Pentium (a 60Mhz) no name brand with a whopping 4Gb hard drive and 8mb of RAM. It eventually died on me about 3 months later...so I had it returned and since that model was "obselete", I got the next closest (in price) model...a 100MHz Packard Bell. :frust:

Ever since then, I've compiled several computers that are grinding away under my desk at home from leftover parts and acquisitions of computers from folks that really didn't use them. My latest purchase was a P4 1.2 256Mb HP I got from Walmart (was on closeout sale).

I've found that building from the ground up is a bit of a hassle (least it was back in the days you had to actually worry about compatability as much). I've enjoyed my Frankenstien machines more, they are the shining examples of how to turn something not usable into something useful.

Speaking of that old Packard Bell...wonder if it will still run?.......
