What positions are required to read your quality manual?

Summarizing:
REQUIREMENT is a local option (not required in ANY of the International Quality Management Standards as a "shall') and probably only necessary for folks in direct production, but companies adhering to Deming's System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK) would probably want to make sure it was available for every employee for reference.

What is important is that each employee be aware of the portion of the entire quality system which directly applies to that employee's function.

Judging by some I have seen: Sitting or standing is fine - don't lie down, in case you fall asleep before you get to the end...

In our case it is simple:

  • NOBODY is reqired to read the manual per se.
  • EVERYONE is required to have Quality Awareness to differing degrees, corresponding to their level of responsibility.

As further information I can say that our manual is a behemoth created by our Group, and intended to cover the entire company and all of its locations. Thus, it would be a massive overkill to require all staff to read it through. Our staff are required to know their way around our local system, which is our translation of said manual and the management standards involved.

Good Morning,

I would like to get feedback from ISO 9001 companies on what positions in the company are required to read the quality manual.

some background..

  • We have a 2 page QMS Awareness pamphlet that is given to new hires.
  • Our current procedures state that ALL workers will read the manual, however, there are some positions (packers) that I don't feel would benefit from reading it. (I think the pamphlet serves them better than reading the manual.)

Generally, the role of manual for any type of management system is to provide a road map to that management system for for staff, and to provide insight into how the organisation goes about managing that management system, to actual and potential customers.
